Over the past 18 months, dedicated efforts have been invested in a project that has been a personal goal of mine since 2017. I am delighted to share that we have commenced our journey in tree disease detection and bark beetle detection, thanks to the collaboration with Forest Research and The Forestry Commission. The Phase 1 project report is attached to this post, and we are now progressing into Phase 2, aiming to establish a successful operational capability.

Numerous individuals from various agencies have played pivotal roles in getting the project off the ground, but I would like to express my gratitude to Forest Research Roslin and Alice Holt for their significant contributions.

📊 2023 Leakage Operational Milestones

We’re pleased to share key accomplishments from our operations in 2023:

👥 Team Dynamics:
Our two full-time leakages teams and one support team have been actively engaged in operational projects with industry leaders, United Utilities, Anglian Water Services, Scottish Water, South West Water, Morrison Water Services, SUEZ UK, ASTERRA and SUEZ (France).

📏 Survey Coverage:
Covering approximately 700km, our teams surveyed Rural TM’s, Rural DMA’s, Satellite POI’s and addressed Reactive escalated work orders.

💧 Results:
This effort led to the identification of 153 confirmed leaks and 47 Points of Interest (POI’s). Notably, our POI’s are being converted at an impressive 70% success rate.

🔍 Commitment to Excellence:
While we acknowledge these accomplishments, our focus remains on continuous improvement. At Cape SPC we are dedicated to refining and developing our processes.

🚀 Future Outlook:
As we look ahead, our goal is to surpass current benchmarks. We’re determined to embrace new challenges, integrate emerging technologies, and further solidify our industry impact.

🤝 Acknowledgments:
A special thanks to our teams for their dedication and to our partners for entrusting us with critical operations. Your confidence propels us forward.

Our team has been hard at work conducting surveys on priority DMA’s and Trunk Main Tiles while responding to reactive work orders. We’re proud to report that out of 4 reactive work orders, 2 resulted in successful detections. One of these detections identified a private supply losing 9m³ per hour, while the other leak located in a Priority DMA returned a significant drop of 3.6m³. While we await further feedback and data on the other survey findings, we’re motivated to keep pushing and proving the detection dog use case. 💧🐶

In the past few weeks, our leakage detection teams have been hard at work, conducting priority and reactive surveys for clients such as Scottish Water, United Utilities and secondary surveys of ASTERRA satellite points for Anglian Water Services. 🤝

In total, we surveyed 32km and successfully pinpointed 7 leaks across all regions.🌍 This achievement has made a substantial positive impact for these companies, showcasing the tangible benefits of our unique service.🐶💧 Cape SPC

🐶 Exceptional Service and Capability in Action!

❗Yesterday, we responded promptly to a survey request from the United Utilities customer service team. In an impressive turnaround time of just 12 hours, we deployed two of our highly skilled dog teams to address a critical issue – a leak impacting customers.

🔍 Mylo led the investigation, commencing approximately 250 meters from the highlighted survey area. As we reached a 90-degree bend in the pipeline, Mylo identified a specific location, concealed beneath a mound of old tree cuttings.

⏱ Within 30 minutes, we deployed Denzel, whose detection abilities confirmed Mylo's findings with precision.

💦 Following the removal of tree cuttings, our suspicions were confirmed – a leak had been detected.

✅ Another success for our dogs teams. We eagerly anticipate the repair results and feedback.

💦 **Repair Update** 🔧

We've got great data to share, United Utilities team has successfully completed the repair mentioned in our previous post and the main is back to running normal. Our incredible leakage detection dog teams, their swift action and sensitive noses helped save a massive 50-60m3 on this reactive tasking. Let's break down the impact of this achievement:

🌊 **Water Savings:**
By detecting the leak we've managed to help save an impressive 50m3 of water per hour, round the clock. That's a staggering 1.2 million litres every single day! 🚿 💧To put it into perspective, at a running cost of just about 0.2p per litre, this translates to an astounding £24,000 saved per day. Imagine the positive effect this has on both resources and costs!💰

🏠 **Equivalent Impact:**
But that's not all! The 1.2 million litres saved each day is equivalent to the water usage of approximately 3400 homes per day. 🏡 🚰 It's remarkable to think how dogs have such and impact in our everyday lives.

🐶 **Unstoppable Detection:**
This isn't just a one-time triumph. Our leakage detection dog teams have been working all year, detecting 79 leaks in total, across aqueducts, trunk mains, and trunk main tiles for United Utilities. Our teams dedication to their role in water conservation is truly commendable! 👏

🐾 Today, we had an important tasking - a reactive work order for a rural survey spanning 5km near a reservoir. The leak was causing a significant loss of 60m3 and was slowly draining the reservoir. This request was submitted yesterday afternoon, and we wasted no time in attending to it first thing this morning.

🐶 Our detection dog Denzel, played a crucial role in this investigation. Denzel located the scent of a leak approximately 10m away from where the main was indicated on the mapping. With Denzel's indication as our guide, we delved into thick vegetation to conduct further investigations. There, we identified a point where water was escaping the ground, and subsequent testing confirmed the presence of chlorine, confirming the leak.

📈 We are eagerly awaiting the data for this repair and are extremely proud to have been able to assist in such an important investigation. It's moments like these that motivate us to continue our mission to make a positive impact.

🤝 If you would like more information about our services and how we can help you tackle leakage issues, please don't hesitate to get in touch. We're here to support in any way we can!

*Latest Development from 2 post ago!* We've recently received valuable feedback from the repairs team. Among the various repairs in the DMA, one of which was successfully located by our detection dog Mylo, resulted in a significant 6m3 drop in the DMA. With the other repairs the DMA is now the lowest it's been in quite some time. This accomplishment truly reflects the power of teamwork and forward thinking. More updates and progress ahead! 🐶 💦 United Utilities Cape SPC Water UK Waterwise Water Industry Journal

Our highly trained water leak detection dog teams provided assistance on a reactive LDTM survey, spanning a distance of approximately 1.5km from a reservoir to a pump station over rural terrain with limited fittings. Our team successfully detected and confirmed the presence of a leak on an asset that was inaccurately represented on the mapping and located outside of the designated boundary. We responded to the call-out within 24 hours, and through the utilisation of our detection dogs, we were able to save United Utilities 6m3 of treated water. 💧🐶👷‍♂️

CAPE is delighted to report another successful outcome with United Utilities customer service team. Yesterday, we conducted on an extensive search covering a 3km stretch of rural trunk main, followed by an additional 2km of private supplies branching off from it. During the investigation, we detected a leak on one of the supplies that ran through a customer's garden.

Mylo, our newest team member, identified the leak in a ditch where multiple land drains converged. To validate our findings, we conducted tests on the run-off, confirming the presence of chlorine. Upon a thorough survey of the surrounding area, we located the leak a couple of meters back from the ditch. We are confident that once the repair is completed, it will result in a saving of 3-5m3.🐶💦👷‍♂️Cape SPC
