**Home Etiquette Update**
It’s been a while since I posted anything on here related to cleaning, so I thought I’d give an update on Home Etiquette.
I could of course go into great detail relating to Covid but we’re all going through it, so no explanation needed.
However the impact it’s had on this particular industry and my small business is colossal.
Firstly working in the cleaning industry is high risk, whether it’s commercial or domestic. This is not generally recognised.
Next, the cost of insurance, wages, products, equipment etc has increased tenfold.
Customers have been lost. They are no longer in the position to have the luxury of a domestic cleaner and commercial customers have lost their businesses and livelihood.
Employees have decided to move on. They don’t want to put themselves in a high risk environment for small rewards. Furlough gave them an opportunity to re-evaluate their lives. Who can blame them?
No one wants to start a new job in a lower paid industry which is high risk. So even though my money has been spent on recruitment, less than a handful of people have applied and none have the relevant basics, like having a car.
And it seems the gap between the cost of running a business and what customers expect to pay for cleaning services is practically zero, therefore is it worth it?
I’d say yes but with some reservations:
My team has gone from 15 to 5.
My customers base has decreased by at least 2 thirds.
The cost of running this type of business has increased and prices for customers hasn’t.
And last week I had a customer tell me that he didn’t want the offered replacement cleaner (when his leaves at the end of the month) as I was no longer a viable business. That hurt.
But…..I still have 5 amazing team members and some very loyal, kind and caring customers.
So I continue for them.
But that’s it. No more new customers. No more new team members (at the moment), but we will continue to service those who are still with us.
It’s not all doom and gloom but it’s the truth.
So if you’re ever looking for a cleaner, please bare in mind all of the above and how hard it is to run a small business. Most businesses will do their best to help you out but if they can’t, there is probably a hundred reasons why….
Lots of love,
Tracey
