It's Officially Nesting Season!!

It's that time of year when the birds are looking for a nice new cosy home. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 it is illegal to disturb or remove active nests between 1st March and 31st August

It's not uncommon for birds to become trapped in your chimney or stove here's a couple of steps on how to remove them:

- Create an escape route: Open a door or window to the outside and dim the lights in the room.

- Use a bright light: Shine a torch up the chimney, as birds are often drawn to light.

- Leave the area: Give the bird time to find its way out.

- Use food as bait: Place some birdseed or bread crumbs near the exit you've created.

-Use a towel or blanket: If the bird is not moving toward the escape route, you may gently encourage it by carefully placing a towel or a blanket near the bird.

🚫🔥 Chimney Safety Reminder 🔥🚫

Check out this chimney I came across recently — multiple flues tied into a single chimney!

Each appliance needs its own properly lined and vented flue to prevent carbon monoxide leaks, backdrafting, and fire hazards.

📆 We're fully booked up until mid to late November

To get your chimney swept and inspected don't delay in arranging an appointment.

Phew! That was a tough one!
To give you an idea of the scale: this boiler stove is built to burn round bales of hay or straw!

It really shouldn’t have built up so much creosote throughout the system… but after a good clean, I discovered multiple holes in the rear chamber. No wonder the powered fan couldn’t burn the fuel properly!

It's Nesting Season!!

It's that time of year when the birds are looking for a nice new cosy home. Between the 1st of April and the 31st of August it's illegal remove a birds nest from a chimney.

That was a tough job!!

Did you know creosote build-up is the cause of all chimney fires. It can occur for various reasons, but slumbering is the most common cause. This happens when the stove is left to tick over with just glowing embers and little to no flame.

Creosote is caused when wood gases aren't burnt off! The log burner needs to be a particular temperature to do this. Too cold and wood gases rise with the heat that's in the appliance, they cool and condense and form creosote, it's basically unburnt fuel!!

The use of a flue thermometer can prevent creosote build up! It's important to monitor the temperature to ensure safe and efficient operation.

Sand pouring from the chimney... it must be a sign I'm due a holiday!!

It's not an everyday occurrence! What could cause something so unusual? Well I have my suspicions everything is guess work but here's the list of clues...

>The flue is far from sitting level
>The stove had moved about 2 inches from it's original position
>The stove is installed with a flexible liner
>And there's a diy sandcastle pouring from the flue.

Let's see if you reach the same conclusion I have?

These crows sure were resourceful making their nest. Stainless steel wall ties, cable ties, screws, nails, and a sock all found amongst the twigs!!
.. or was it sneaky builders dropping materials down a chimney? What do you think?
