Here at Ken Dodd and Son we pride ourselves on the fact we are a family run business who have been sweeping chimneys for over 50 years, spanning over 3 generations

Ken Dodd passed the business down to his son Colin who has over 35 years experience and now his daughter Kayleigh is also a qualified sweep

As the burning season is coming to an end now is the best time to have your log burner, open fire or Rayburn sweep ready to start the new season in the Autumn.

We also offer small repairs such as fitting new fire bricks, baffle plates and rope replacement. Furthermore, we are equipped to inspect any flue or fireplace with a camera inspection on request.

Having your solid fuel appliance cleaned and maintained regularly is important for several reasons:

Ken Dodd and son Chimney Sweeps are a family run local business with over 50 years of experience.

We are able to clean wood burning and multi fuel stoves, open fires, Rayburners and AGAs. We also offer maintenance such as replacement of fire bricks, baffle plates and rope seals.

Here at Ken Dodd and son Chimney Sweeps we recommend you have your appliance swept at least once a year depending on the fuel you burn and how often you are using your appliance. It may need to be as often as every 4 months to ensure your appliance is working as efficiently as possible.

We are always professional, clean and tidy and use the most up to date method of rotary power sweeping and are Rodtech approved sweeps.

We cover all local areas in and around Ludlow and can travel further afield on request.

As Autumn 🍂 is fast approaching our diary is getting pretty full so would encourage you get your sweep booked in ready for the colder months and the new burning season.

Here at Ken Dodd and Son we have the father and daughter dream team 🌟🌟

Colin has passed all his knowledge and experience onto his daughter Kayleigh over the last 18 months and with her completing her Rodtech Sweeping Course she is now competent enough to sweep on her own.

Colin will still be sweeping Monday-Wednesday with Kayleigh now doing Thursdays and Fridays letting her dad have a couple of well earned days off a week

If you have a stove, open fire, Rayburner or Aga we’d encourage you to check when you last had your appliance swept. As we are coming to the end of the burning season now is the best time to contact us to have your appliance swept and have any maintenance done such as new fire bricks, rope seal, glass clean or refit and baffle plate replacement all of which we are able to offer.

When was the last time you had your solid fuel appliance swept and maintained?

What is ‘Slumber Burning?’

Slumber Burning is when a wood burning or solid fuel appliance is purposely shut down at a low output normally for overnight burning to be revived in the morning without the need for relighting.

It involves shutting down the air vents, this causes the fire to smoulder rather than burn and reduces the heat generated, basically you are starving the fire of oxygen.

Why we advise against Slumber Burning

Slumber Burning significantly affects the secondary burn of particulates and gasses which are much more likely to stick to the wall of the chimney or liner with tar. If this is not cleaned and cleared regularly it will cause a blockage, increasing the risk of a chimney fire and the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Below is an example of a stove we swept recently where the customer has been slumber burning, as you can see we dislodged two large lumps of tar which were blocking the flu. This was severely affecting the efficiency of the stove and the risk of a chimney fire or carbon monoxide poisoning was extremely high.

As the weather starts to turn colder this week a lot of you will be looking to light your fire or woodburner to try and combat some of the cost of rising energy bills to heat your home.

It’s important to ensure your appliance is regularly maintained by a professional chimney sweep like us here at Ken Dodd and Son (although perhaps it should be Ken Dodd, son and granddaughter 😉)

We now also offer a full chimney inspection with a HD camera on request

A lovely recent customer agreed to let us take some before and after pictures of her stove. As you can see the flue needed a good sweep to clear that blockage which not only causes the stove not to burn at its full efficiency it could have also lead to a chimney fire. Now it’s all clean and most importantly safe to use ready for the winter ahead.
