Several weeks ago the Federation of British Chimney Sweeps sought official confirmation that sweeps are formally named as essential workers during the covid-19 crisis.

We have written to several government departments and organisations as well as a number of MP’s and prominent civil servants in the Home Office, MCHLG and Public Health England amongst others. We have highlighted the specific role of the sweeps with regard to public safety. We have noted that individuals working in the ‘energy’ sector are included as essential on government lists, but that those working with solid fuel are not named. We have received confirmation of our letter from The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and are awaiting further clarification.

In the absence of an ‘official’ response, we would like to assure you that chimney sweeps are already essential workers by the Government's own definitions as part of the energy sector. But we know you would like to see this officially confirmed.
Sweeps are essential workers because:

• Your work is essential to prevent injury to the public from a variety of potential health hazards.
• Your work is essential to the protection of property
• Your work is essential for maintaining primary and secondary domestic and commercial heating system.
• Your work can only be undertaken on site and not from your home.
• Your work prevents incidents which would place additional stress on already stretched emergency and public services.

Through its member associations the Federation now represents over 80% of professional chimney sweeps and is well placed to pursue this issue. Please watch out for updates from the Federation and via your respective trade associations.

Chimney sweeping has been confirmed to be essential so we will be carrying on as usual and following government guidelines as we have been.

All we ask where possible is to:
• Keep at least 2 meters distance or preferably in a different room.
• Have a window open in the room we will be working.
• Clear a path and remove items from the hearth and surrounding area.
• If you or anyone in your family are ill or have been in contact with anyone with symptoms please get in contact and we will reschedule your appointment. (Please bare in mind this is our busiest time of year and there may be a bit of a wait)

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to send us a message.
We have been inundated with calls already this morning so please be patient with us and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

As always we appreciate your custom each year and thank you all for your support during these difficult times.

One of today’s jobs...
We discovered when sweeping this chimney that the installer of this flue had left the top in a potentially dangerous way. The liner had just been hacked off and left too long out of the chimney, leaving hardly any gap between the flue and the cowl for the smoke to escape properly. None of the correct parts were used to finish the flue liner off at the top properly either. We removed the old cowl, cut the liner to the correct height, installed the correct fittings and sealed around the flue, and finished off with a new stainless steel cowl. All of which should have been done by the installer on the day of fitting.

It’s ‘Test it Tuesday’! ... Remember to test your carbon monoxide and smoke alarms every Tuesday to check they are still operating properly. It is now law that all appliances fitted should have a carbon monoxide alarm installed in the same room. If you haven’t already got one, feel free to get in touch as we can supply and fit them for you!

Completed this chimney pot in the scorching weather this week! The chimney was slightly lower than the ridge of this house, causing a downdraught on a windy day. A tall chimney pot as been put on so that it now clears the ridge, plus an anti-downdraught cowl fitted on top. The fire can now be used without the worry of any blow backs of smoke into the room!
