Hi folks, I thought I’d do a little post about the honey bee, because at this time of year I receive countless calls about them ( I must have had two dozen in the last couple of weeks. )
This is the period when they start to swarm. A Queen will leave the original colony with a percentage of her workers to form new colonies. This activity can be quite alarming for people if the bees turn up on their property. Bees can literally end up anywhere, as you see in this picture of South Street in Louth, this time last year. However, do not fear folks,as they are totally harmless in this state.
Honey bees, all bees in fact, are probably the most important single species on earth. If they were to go extinct we would shortly follow, as they are responsible for pollinating a large percentage of our food crops. So, if you find yourself in this situation please do not be concerned. Your first call should be to a local bee keeper who will be very pleased to collect the swarm for you free of charge. They will then introduce the bees to a safe new home in one of their hives. Often though, they will move on quite quickly as the Queen wants to find a suitable location for her new colony. She will sometimes rest several times on her journey.
While on the subject of bees, several bee species like to use our properties as safe nesting sites. Bumblebees, Mason bees and others like a wall cavity, loft space, bird box or maybe under a shed. Again, this should not worry you. These species have a short reproductive season and will only be present for a few weeks and will then disappear.
A very knowledgable and experienced local Beekeeper is Poppy Dales. Please get in touch with me if you need her number.
If you are a nature lover and you want to protect Bees, please share this post. Knowledge is all.
