Hi folks, I thought I’d do a little post about the honey bee, because at this time of year I receive countless calls about them ( I must have had two dozen in the last couple of weeks. )
This is the period when they start to swarm. A Queen will leave the original colony with a percentage of her workers to form new colonies. This activity can be quite alarming for people if the bees turn up on their property. Bees can literally end up anywhere, as you see in this picture of South Street in Louth, this time last year. However, do not fear folks,as they are totally harmless in this state.
Honey bees, all bees in fact, are probably the most important single species on earth. If they were to go extinct we would shortly follow, as they are responsible for pollinating a large percentage of our food crops. So, if you find yourself in this situation please do not be concerned. Your first call should be to a local bee keeper who will be very pleased to collect the swarm for you free of charge. They will then introduce the bees to a safe new home in one of their hives. Often though, they will move on quite quickly as the Queen wants to find a suitable location for her new colony. She will sometimes rest several times on her journey.
While on the subject of bees, several bee species like to use our properties as safe nesting sites. Bumblebees, Mason bees and others like a wall cavity, loft space, bird box or maybe under a shed. Again, this should not worry you. These species have a short reproductive season and will only be present for a few weeks and will then disappear.
A very knowledgable and experienced local Beekeeper is Poppy Dales. Please get in touch with me if you need her number.
If you are a nature lover and you want to protect Bees, please share this post. Knowledge is all.

Good afternoon people of Lincolnshire. Just a update to bring some information to your attention.
With the harvest well underway, it's common at this time of year for domestic and commercial properties to be visited and become infested with brown rats.
This is due to the natural harbourage for these species being removed as the harvest continues. Typically these rodents will burrow under hedgerows, garden sheds, decking, even under houses and there on into the cavity walls and within loft spaces. They cause damage and have the potential to spread some foul diseases.
It is vital that these rodents do not become established within your business or home.

Give us at East Lincs Pest Control a ring if you suspect brown rat activity. Don't put up with pests.

Why are there so many Wasps and Hornets this year?
It has been ‘The Perfect Storm.’
This year, weather conditions and food sources have ensured that the young queens have been able to get their first brood reared to maturity. The queens then become egg laying machines and never leave their nests again.
In these conditions, the workers have got an inexhaustible food supply to forage-predominantly insects for most of the season.
This promotes large nests with high numbers of wasps. A ‘mega nest’ can have somewhere in the region of 8000 to 10,000 wasps in it.
While the queen continues laying eggs, the workers have to forage intensively, using all the hours of daylight and sometimes even into the dark. The population of the nest then ‘explodes’.
At the moment, a lot of nests are still in full swing, with workers bringing lots of food back for the larvae and there is a constant flow of wasps going in and out.
Other nests will have a queen that has finished laying which means that her work force has no larvae to attend to. This is when worker wasps turn from foraging meat to sugar. They are ‘on the rampage’ with nothing to do except feed themselves. It’s then that they gather in large numbers and can spend all day foraging, only having to return to the nest at night. This leads to the situations we are seeing of high concentrations of wasps in certain areas.
Please be aware that if you are in an area where there are a high number of wasps and you get stung, you can often end up with multiple stings because wasps release a pheromone which encourages the others to attack.
The weather will dictate what happens with the length of time this situation lasts.
In the past, we have treated nests well into December! It all depends on the elements.

This lovely weather we are having has got all insect life growing at a incredible rate, with all the insects at the bottom of the food chain doing so well, this in turn gives our native wasp species plenty of food to feed their offspring and in turn multiply every single day.

This means many of you this year will indeed end up with a wasp nest on your property, maybe more in some cases.

Give us a call if you suspect you do for a fast, affordable, friendly and efficient service

Good morning everyone!
The wasp nest season is well underway now!
We are doing wasp nest treatments and wasp nest removals but it is a slower start to the season than last year, although the nests I have treated have been big and strong.
I went to a large private residence in Louth recently, which had 3 dorma windows, and between them were 5 nests which I managed to treat successfully without incident! Once treated there were a terrific amount of wasps trying to attack me but I was safe in my bee suit!
However, once I was off the roof, putting all my equipment away, one sneaky devil flew up my shirt and stung me on my stomach - it was 'quite painful.' :)
We are also treating lots of flea infestations and prolific ant colonies.
As ever, we are doing plenty of 'rat work,' and as harvest progresses it will increase dramatically.
It's a glamorous life ;)
