This original London stock brick wall was carefully stripped back, cleaned, and repointed using traditional NHL 3.5 lime mortar with a flush joint finish. The existing mortar joints were raked out and renewed to enhance both the appearance and long-term durability of the brickwork.

Unlike hard cement mortars, lime mortar allows the wall to breathe naturally, helping to manage moisture and reduce the risk of damage to historic bricks. The flush pointing finish provides a clean, timeless appearance while preserving the character and authenticity of the original masonry.

The result is a beautifully restored exposed brick feature wall that combines traditional craftsmanship with improved protection and longevity.

Another successful restoration project completed by UK Performance Restoration in London. This project involved careful paint removal to expose the original brickwork, followed by a full professional brick cleaning process to restore the natural character and appearance of the façade.

We then carried out traditional repointing using NHL 3.5 lime mortar mixed with sand, ensuring a breathable and long-lasting finish suitable for historic and period properties. The works were completed with detailed decorating and finishing touches, bringing the property back to life while preserving its original charm and structural integrity.

Old brick and stone buildings were designed to “breathe” — and that’s exactly where modern cement mortar goes wrong. Unlike traditional lime mortar, cement is hard, dense, and traps moisture inside the wall instead of letting it escape.

Over time, this trapped moisture leads to cracks, damp issues, and even causes the surface of bricks or stone to break away. Lime mortar, on the other hand, is softer, flexible, and breathable — allowing moisture to evaporate safely and protecting the structure for the long term.

If your property has been repointed with cement, it could be doing more harm than good — and switching back to lime might be the key to preserving it properly.

Halfway through this transformation in Carlyle Square, SW3 👌

Our team at UK Performance Restoration Ltd is currently deep into restoring this beautiful boundary wall in the heart of Chelsea — and the results are already speaking for themselves.

Years of dirt, pollution staining and organic growth are being carefully removed using specialist brick cleaning techniques, revealing the original character and colour beneath. This is still a work in progress, but the contrast between the cleaned and untreated sections shows just how dramatic a professional restoration can be.

We take pride in preserving period brickwork while restoring it sympathetically — no harsh methods, no shortcuts, just the right process for the right surface.

Stay tuned for the final reveal.

If your property in SW3 (or across London) needs expert brick cleaning or façade restoration, get in touch with our team today.

Another period property brought back to life 🧱✨

This project involved full render removal, followed by repointing using breathable lime mortar (NHL 3.5 mixed with sand) to protect and preserve the original brickwork.

We then completed decorative repairs and painting, restoring the traditional character of this Victorian façade while ensuring long-term durability.

Using the correct materials is essential for older buildings – lime mortar allows the walls to breathe and prevents future damage.
