The newspapers have been writing about 'mutant bed bugs’ spreading across the UK as summer travel peaks.
With more of us travelling, staying in hotels, and booking short-term holiday rentals, bed bugs are easily hitchhiking back into homes inside suitcases and clothing. When people try to deal with them using cheap shop-bought sprays, they find the bugs simply survive the treatment.
If you are travelling this summer, there are a few straightforward ways to protect your property:
• Inspect first - Don't put your suitcase straight onto the bed or carpet when you check into a room. Use the luggage rack and do a quick check of the mattress seams for tiny black spots.
• Heat is your best tool - When you get back, wash your travel clothes at 60°C immediately.
• Skip the DIY chemicals - Successfully eradicating an infestation requires a targeted combination of deep inspection, physical extraction, and professional heat treatments. A successful treatment needs a professional pest control technician.
