Part two of my new series alert: DR SAM ON THE GO. Your questions, answered before you’ve even checked your inbox.

“What other ingredients can I combine with azelaic acid?”

The good news? It plays very well with others.

DIY sunscreen? Stop right there. Uneven filter distribution, an untested SPF claim and clog-promoting oils make this a recipe for sunburn and breakouts, not protection. Treat SPF as if it’s a medicine - use a properly tested, labelled sunscreen you can trust.

Tanmaxxing? This made me want to weep. Think of a tan as DNA damage you can see, whether it comes from the sun or a sunbed. There’s no safe way to tanmaxx…

Seek shade, cover up, apply SPF 50 generously, and fake a healthy glow with the only safe kind …a self-tan. My choice is and as they offer a realistic colour even on pale skin and are less likely to clog pores.

My current favourite snack - high in protein, rich in polyphenols and healthy fats, whilst keeping me feeling full.

Spoiler alert: on occasion, a Candy Kitten or a square of Tony’s might accidentally fall in my mouth instead. Balance 🤪

Comment SNACK and I’ll send you the full shopping list.

Azelaic acid has the internet all worked up - as someone in a longterm relationship with AA, here’s where I stand.

Thank-you and for intelligently unpacking the science.

One of the biggest misconceptions in skincare is that oily skin doesn’t need moisturiser.

The oil you can see on your skin is sebum. It’s produced by your sebaceous glands and sits on top of the skin. It’s what can make our skin appear shiny.

But the thing that keeps your skin hydrated is your skin barrier. The outer layer of your skin is made up of dead skin cells, held together by a lipid matrix made from ceramides, fatty acids and cholesterol. Think of the skin barrier as a wall; the lipid matrix is the mortar between the bricks of dead skin cells. This specialised structure is what traps water inside your skin and prevents it from escaping - that’s what maintains hydration.

That’s why oily skin can still feel tight and irritated when using actives if you skip moisturiser. Flawless Moisturiser Balance makes this easy.

Comment OIL and I’ll tell you more.
