How to remove candle wax from wood floor

First, get an ice cube and harden the wax.

Then scrape it off gently using a plastic ruler or credit card (don’t use a knife or anything sharp as this could damage the wood).

Then, use Cif Cream to get off any excess.

Finally, use a wooden floor wax to ensure your floor remains undamaged.

To prevent candle wax stains there are a couple of things you can do:

Keep candles a good distance from walls. Around 15cm should do the trick and stop any splashes.

Place candles on a drip tray. The tray will collect all the wax that drips down the side of the candle to prevent spills so that you don’t have to worry about how to remove candle wax from wood.

Clean surfaces regularly. Candle wax stains are usually more difficult to remove when it drips on a surface with grime and dirt build-up. So, make sure you regularly wipe down areas close to where you usually place your candles.

How to use and store cleaning products safely

Always read the ingredients list before using any product and use products as directed on the label. The instructions are there for your safety.

Know what different ingredients are used for and whether they can be harmful - keep reading to learn more about this.

Avoid mixing products together. Some cleaners are perfectly safe to use but can produce toxic gasses if mixed with other chemicals.

Use their original containers.

Keep them locked away and out of reach from children and pets.

In general, keep products on a shelf high enough that a child or pets can't reach

You shouldn’t have to risk the container falling on you when you need them next.

Ensure any storage space you choose is cool, clean, and dry.

Removing Burnt-on Grease from Pans

Cleaning burnt-on grease from pans can be turned from an arduous task into a satisfying exercise in showing dirt the door. Here are a couple of approaches to get you started:

Soak and scrub

The first line of defence is soaking the pan in hot water mixed with a little washing up liquid to loosen the dirt. Next, use a wire brush to rend the grease from the pan, restoring a dazzling finish – though first make sure that the wire brush is appropriate for that particular pan.

Baking soda and vinegar

You could also try using baking soda and vinegar to clean burnt-on grease, though other methods may be more quicker and more effective.

Sprinkle baking soda in the pan

Spray with vinegar

Scrub with a sponge to remove burnt-on dirt (leave overnight for best results)

Repeat process if needed

Note: clean up spills and splatters promptly before they have a chance to harden and become difficult to remove.

How to remove a fish odour from the refrigerator or freezer

Remove food from the refrigerator or freezer. Then remove the drawers or trays.

Create a solution of around one litre of warm water, a few drops of washing up liquid, and a quarter of a cup of baking soda.

Use a sponge to apply the solution to all surfaces of the refrigerator, including the door and the drawers or trays. Use more solution to work on the more stubborn areas, where food or smelly stains may be more ingrained.

Use a cloth or a paper towel to dry all the treated areas, so that they do not freeze.

Apply a small amount of vanilla extract to a paper towel and run this over the surfaces. The natural fragrance will combat any lingering fish smells.

Close the door and allow to dry fully. Then return the drawers or trays and the food.

Note: make sure that the fish is covered in a sealed container – this should help to minimise the odour. You can also place a bowl of baking soda in the fridge; baking soda will help to absorb these odours.

How to Clean a Bathroom Extractor Fan

The first step, as with anything electrical, is to ensure that the power is off. Once this has been done, you should lay down some sheeting or old newspapers to catch any detritus or dust that comes loose during the cleaning process.

You may need a screwdriver to remove the external cover and access the inside of the fan’s casing. Once the outer casing has been removed, place it in a tub or sink of warm soapy water and let it soak for a few minutes. Once this has been done, remove it from the water and use a kitchen scourer to clean it thoroughly but gently. Leave it to dry out again after this is done.

Remove the fan filter and the fan component, which will likely have been exposed when the casing was removed. Place both in warm water to soak, then clean and dry them exactly like you did with the cover.

Removing the fan grants access to the interior, and you should clean and dust this with a small hand brush, using an old toothbrush to get to all the places that are more difficult to reach. Once this has been done, clean everything with a kitchen scourer or sponge and allow the inside to dry. Once you are sure that everything has been thoroughly dried, replace the components you removed and seal up the fan again.

Note: having the knowledge and expertise to clean a bathroom extractor fan can make it last longer before needing to be replaced.

How to clean cloudy glasses and glassware

Rinse the glass. Run the glass under the tap, using warm water, taking care not to run it too hot, or the glass risks cracking.

Add some mild washing-up liquid to the washing-up bowl. Avoid using any harsh bleach-based detergent or perfumed detergent, as these can be abrasive and cause damage to the glass, or linger on the surface.

Using a sponge soaked in the soap and water solution, turn the glass round against the sponge. A handled sponge is preferable to avoid applying too much direct hand pressure onto the glass whilst cleaning.

Use vinegar - mix two tablespoons of white vinegar to one cup of water and, either using a spray bottle or a paper towel, apply the solution to the glass. The acid within the vinegar will break down any cloudiness.[2] It will also give a more sparkling finish to the glass.

Wash away the vinegar solution using warm water.

Use a microfibre cloth or some kitchen roll to dry them straight away.

Note: the best way is to hand wash them. It’s the gentlest yet most effective method to care for your glasses, as well as remove any unsightly foggy film. If done regularly, this simple washing technique should be sufficient to prevent further cloudy build-up.

How to get stains out of white clothes

Commercial laundry detergents can be used to get stains out of white clothes like ketchup, jam, and grass.

Add a good-quality laundry detergent, such as Persil, to the stain. Leave the detergent on the stain for five minutes. Rinse the garment using cold running water. Place the stain under cold running water, until you have flushed away all traces of the detergent. Always run the cold water from the opposite side of the fabric to the stain, to push the stain away from the fibres. Finally, wash your clothes as normal, using a high-quality detergent such as Persil. Check the care label and follow the recommendations to wash your clothing as normal.

You can get a stain out of white shirt or other items of clothing using white vinegar, from yellow sweat stains to blood stains. Pour white vinegar directly onto the stain.

For a sweat stain or deodorant marks pour a bit of white vinegar directly onto the stain. Rub the white vinegar into the stain to make sure it is entirely covered. With the white vinegar covering the stain, wash the garment on a normal wash cycle in the washing machine.

Salt is a surprisingly effective option if you're looking for home remedies for how to remove stains from white clothes. Let the garment soak for 3-4 hours in cold salt water. Apply liquid laundry detergent directly to the stain. Gently rub the detergent into the stain with your fingers. With the laundry detergent directly on the stain, put in the washing machine your normal wash cycle.

Note: remember it is important to act fast before the stain can set in. Don’t forget to always check the wash care label of the garment before you try to clean it.

How to remove soap scum from shower

The best way to clean soap scum is by using a product specifically designed for the bathroom, like Cif Power & Shine Bathroom Spray. While you can use other home remedies like lemon juice or vinegar, commercial cleaning products tend to be much easier to use (and require much less scrubbing!). Remember to initially test any new products or techniques on a small, inconspicuous area, and always read the instructions on the label. It’s also a good idea to ventilate the room and wear rubber gloves when using cleaning products.

An alternative method would be to use a mixture of vinegar, water, and washing-up liquid as a quick and easy soap scum remover. Fill a spray bottle and apply a generous mist to all surfaces, or wipe the solution onto the surface with a cloth, before rinsing clean. The vinegar will cut through the scum whilst the dishwashing soap will ensure no residue is left behind. Try using a dish soap with lemon in it for even more soap scum removal power.

Where soap scum and minerals from hard water have really set in, it may be necessary to scrub with something rougher than a cloth in order to scratch away the hard residue. A kitchen scourer can be used to gently scrape off soap scum, but care must be taken not to apply too much pressure and scratch the surface itself. An old toothbrush can double up as an extremely useful soap scum remover when it comes to cleaning soap stains from taps, plug holes, and chrome bathroom surfaces.

Note: dry the shower area with a squeegee and microfibre cloth after each use.

How to wash wool

Hand washing is usually the safest answer to how to wash wool sweaters and accessories, because you have more control over how the material is handled. While some washing machines offer settings and cycles that mimic hand washing, a good old bucket of water is still the preferred method for many wool lovers.

Fill a bowl with water that is just warm to the touch. As you may know, wool can shrink in very high temperatures, so it’s always best to use lukewarm water rather than hot. If you’re worried that this will affect the cleaning process, don’t be – many laundry detergents are designed to work in cooler temperatures as manufacturers strive to encourage homeowners to wash at lower temperatures to conserve energy.

Add laundry detergent to the warm water. It’s best to use a laundry detergent that is specifically designed for wool, like Persil Non-Bio, or that is designed for delicate fabrics. Follow the directions on the label for accurate dosing advice. If using a powdered detergent, use your hands to agitate the water and encourage the grains to dissolve. Make sure you wear rubber gloves to protect your skin.

Add your woollen item(s) to the bowl and gently swirl around in the soapy water. If you're hand washing a wool scarf, hat and gloves together, you can probably wash them together to save time (but be aware of washing similar colours together to avoid colour run). Take care to swirl the garments around in gentle motions and not to tug them around, as this could stretch the wool.

Note: if you're looking for how to wash merino wool, these tips still apply — but be sure to check the label of your garment first.

How to wash gym clothes

Using the washing machine to clean sweaty gym clothes is obviously the quickest and easiest option.

The care label will give you all the information for washing gym clothes correctly and safely, from what temperature to wash gym clothes at to advice on whether you can tumble dry them or not.

Modern tech fabrics often used for gym clothing are quite fragile and can lose their effect when subjected to excess heat. Therefore it is often advisable to use warm or even cold water wash cycles.

Turn your sweaty gym clothes inside out.

The best detergents for gym clothes will be ones that are designed for more delicate fabrics.

These are kinder to your clothing, while still cleaning effectively.

Banish bad odours from sweaty gym clothes with fabric conditioner.

Always use a good quality fabric conditioner in your washing cycle. It'll leave your gym kit smelling impossibly fresh while helping to reduce friction and wear and tear in the machine.

Always air dry your gym clothes.

Note: washing gym clothes needs to happen ASAP – don’t leave crumpled up in a bag.

How to wash towels, dry them, and make them soft and fluffy

The best way to wash towels in your quest for learning how to make towels fluffy is to wash them with other towels, separate from the rest of your laundry. This is both to achieve the soft texture you're after but also to protect more delicate fabrics - after all, towels are made of pretty sturdy stuff.

As with steps for washing other laundry, it is always best to separate colours and lights and wash them with like for like items.

The hotter the wash, the softer the towels. If you're still unsure what setting to wash towels on, a mixed load setting will be the safest option.

Use a good quality laundry detergent.

Don't forget to add in some fabric conditioner. This is one of the most important steps when it comes to understanding how to make towels soft. Using a fabric conditioner will help make them soft and fluffy, as it deposits lubricating chemicals onto your towels to reduce static, make the fibres feel softer and of course, help the towels to smell great too.

Always remove towels from the machine as soon as the cycle has finished. This will help to prevent mildew build-up which can lead to musty smells.

Don't be scared to tumble dry towels on a high heat. If you don’t have a tumble dryer, hang your towels outside to dry in the sun. Regardless of which option you go for, both these drying methods will help sanitise your towels further. Alternating between the two (tumble drying for 20 minutes before hanging on a clothesline) will help protect the fibres of your towel and produce the best results.

Once your towel is completely dry, carefully fold and store in a cupboard or drawer. For optimum results, store them in a warm airing cupboard.

Note: wash new towels before you use them at home. Washing new towels as normal using a good quality detergent and fabric conditioner on a high heat will get them clean, soft, and ready for use. Just be sure you always check the care label before washing.
