Now that the children are well into the Autumn term, you have doubtless witnessed a variety of shirts and clothing making their way home with an array of stains on them. Ssfe Cleaning Group, the professional domestic cleaning company, recommend the following tricks to combat common stains endured from a day at school from biro, ink and glue to tipex. So here are some top tips to removing school stains from clothing.

Crayons: Place a folded some kitchen paper under the stained area. Spray the back of the fabric with WD-40 to help transfer the colour. Turn the fabric over and rub a little liquid washing up liquid onto the crayon marks to loosen them even more. Wash in the hottest water possible (that the clothing tolerates) with all-fabric washing detergent.

Ink Pens: Dab the ink spots with a little cotton wool that’s been dipped in surgical spirit. Allow the surface to air-dry and wash in the warmest water that’s safe for the fabric.

Biro: It’s uncanny how children manage to stain their clothes with biro pens at school, but feat not, all you need is hairspray! Lie the stained top or item of clothing out on a work surface. Spray liberally with hairspray, then take a damp cloth and blot the stain (but don’t rub it as it will make it worse). Repeat as many times as needed until the stain is lighter. Then spray with hairspray one more time, then wash as normal.

Tipex or White correction fluid: If we are talking about the water-based product, then scratch as much of it off with your fingernail or equivalent. Then, wash in the washing machine as normal. For petroleum-based correction fluid scratch off as much as possible. Then apply a citrus-base cleaner, like Goo Gone, to dissolve the stain.

Glue: Don’t stress over removing craft glue, just pre-treat and wash as normal. For tougher glues, like Super Glue, rub acetone on the fabric with an old toothbrush to remove the hardened layers. If necessary, apply the acetone to the back of the stain. Rinse the area very well and then wash in the washing machine as normal.

Grease: A simple solution for removing a greasy stain, but one that you may not think is logical for removing stains, is cola. Simply pour a litre of cola over the stain in a bowl and allow to soak for 30 minutes and then wash in the washing machine as normal.

Good luck and banish school stains forever.

Now we’ve officially come out of the winter hibernation, the warmer weather is upon us and the spring beauty is finally here! Complete with a little sunshine, fresh air and some pumping tunes to make it (relatively) fun, it’s time to give your home a top-to-bottom buffing ready for those summer holidays. Spring cleaning is an essential part of a happy home. The season is a time of renewal; so why should deep cleaning your house be any different?
The greenery outdoors and fresh, warm air usually makes us want to prettify the indoor space too. But for those that need some extra encouragement to get the full cleaning kit out, it can be hard to find the motivation to make a start. With a cleaning checklist in place and a plan of attack the daunting task of spring cleaning can be stress free and efficient. Here’s a few tips to get you going:
Air Out Your Home
If you’re lacking the enthusiasm to get your hands dirty with the big cleaning chores, start by opening up all the windows in your home. The fresh air will give you a healthy dose of motivation and help to clear out that cold, stuffy winter air. Encourage the spring air to come in to boost indoor air quality and reduce air pollution. It’s amazing how much fresher and better your home will feel and smell afterwards! Airing out your home should be done regularly – especially if anyone in the house suffers from allergies or asthma.
Declutter – Be Ruthless!
It’s ridiculous how quickly clutter can build up in the home. Before you begin to tackle the actual cleaning side of things – get rid of as much stuff as you can. This will make life much easier for you come spring cleaning time. Be ruthless too, saving something you haven’t touched for 12 months in hope it’ll have use again isn’t worth it. If you do find it hard to part with certain things, create a storage system to clear out without actually throwing away.
Arrange to have a skip bin delivered to your home to help with the declutter process. This will give you the opportunity to throw away bulk items, rubbish and unused pieces without overflowing your regular bins or needing a tip pass to dispose of. It’ll also ensure all your spring cleaning materials are handled in an environmentally friendly way instead of clogging up landfills.
Rearrange the Space
There’s nothing better than using spring cleaning as an excuse to rearrange the space. Breathe new life into your home by changing around the main living room, the bedroom or the outdoor space. This will make space feel brighter, fresher and better for the warmer months and gives you a chance to clean under furniture and appliances too. Keep entryways clear, allow 3-feet of space around all furniture so your home doesn’t feel cluttered and avoid pushing everything up against walls. Allowing furniture to ‘float’ like this can create a space that feels more inviting and cosy.
Show Your Floors Some TLC
Most of us do the mopping and vacuuming on a weekly basis but spring cleaning gives you the chance to really show your floors some love. And even with regular cleaning during the week, they’ll certainly be craving a deeper clean! Vacuum and shampoo or steam clean rugs and carpet, scrub out any stains and add some nice-smelling powder. Focus on high-traffic zones first and any places where furniture can be easily moved to get underneath and clean. Use this time to polish floorboards, scrub grout between tiles – especially in the bathroom and some sparkle to all flooring.
Clear Out the Fridge and Pantry
There’s a fine line between getting rid of your old fridge and pantry items and actually spring cleaning them both out. Whilst you definitely want to do a fridge and pantry declutter, a deep clean scrub is definitely in order. Check expiry dates, be ruthless and don’t be shy on wipes and hot soapy water to rid those germs. It’s a good idea to wipe down containers, sauces etc with a damp cloth that have been subjected to spills. Once everything is clean and ready to go back in, arrange everything in an organised fashion so it’s easy to see what you have come next meal time.
Freshen the Furniture
Your furniture is exposed to grotty hands and general wear and tear every day – especially if you have young children running around the home. Use spring cleaning as an excuse to breathe new life into couches, chairs and other pieces. Clean upholstered furnishings, take cushions and throw rugs for cleaning and to be aired outside. Wax wooden furniture and buff with a clean cloth (don’t forget to wipe down with a damp cloth first though).
Clean Window Treatments and Light Fixtures
Take down curtains and wash, use old socks to clean individual panels of slat blinds to remove dust and give windows a good scrub while you’re at it. Clean out window and sliding door tracks as debris and dust easily builds up here. Use warm soapy water and a scrubbing brush to wash window security screens and rinse thoroughly. Remove dust from light fixtures, ceiling fans and exhaust vents and wash with warm water and dishwashing liquid to clean.
Room by Room and Forgotten Spaces
Spring cleaning can get a little overwhelming, even for the most organised of us. To prevent this, tackle one room at a time and move onto the next room only once that space has been finished. Don’t forget those forgotten spaces like pesky spots that are usually overlooked with a regular clean. Behind the toilet, kitchen bin, washing machine and under the couch cushions are common areas.
Spring cleaning doesn’t need to be a huge mission. With the right planning and some backup (get all hands in the household involved one weekend) your house will be looking brand new and you’ll step into summer feeling refreshed and revived.

Tips on how to Defrost a Freezer.
Have you ever found yourself struggling with how best to defrost your freezer? It’s always a good idea to clear out your freezer once in a while, especially if it has been working hard for you over the summer and in advance of the busy winter season ahead with Christmas just around the corner.
Freezers need to be defrosted because the more a freezer is opened, which tends to happen more frequently in the summer, the more moisture settles in the interior of the freezer to form ice. The problem with this is that it not only requires more energy to run a freezer but it can be difficult to open drawers for example. Generally speaking, you should try to defrost your freezer around twice a year to keep on top of the ice forming and ensuring that you are running it as efficiently as possible.
SSFE CLEANING GROUP, the domestic cleaning professionals, have some top tips to share with you on how to rid your freezer of excess ice and to give it a good clean.
It’s a good idea to clear out your freezer or throw a dinner party with all your goodies. Alternatively, wrap your food in newspaper and store it somewhere cool or in a cool bag to help to delay the thawing.
Then, switch off your freezer and open the freezer door so that the ice can melt slowly or you can help to speed up this process by placing a bowl of hot water inside the appliance and closing the door.
Once any loosened ice starts to melt on the side panels, gently pull away any pieces without forcing them.
The best way to collect the defrost water and excess ice is with a sponge or cloth, thereby preventing too much water from ending up on the floor.
If much water is expected, try using a deep baking tray at the very bottom of the freezer.
Keep an eye on your freezer and avoid going out as the freezing process will need to be supervised.
Clean your freezer with a little warm water with a little washing-up liquid added. Do not use substances such as vinegar as these corrode the plastic.
Then rinse it with clean water and dry it well.
Now it’s ready to use once again so plug it back in, switch it on and as soon as the temperature is low enough, you can restock it with food.
Please be careful never to re-freeze defrosted foods.
Good luck and show your freezer some TLC.

Stainless steel appliances are now in every modern kitchen. These shiny surfaces make your home more elegant but also need some effort in order to keep them looking pristine. Stainless steel can be the most resistant material to rust and the normal wear and tear. If you take proper care when cleaning stainless steel surfaces, it will keep its shine for many years.
With that in mind, we thought we’d share some handy tips about how to clean your stainless steel surfaces without damaging them:

1. Do not use cleaning products, which aren’t suitable for stainless steel.

Sounds simple right? An easy solution is to always read the labels when you choose your cleaning product for stainless steel. Some of them can scratch or damage stainless steel surfaces, so it’s best to avoid them:
Abrasive cleaners
They contain tiny particles of product which will harm stainless steel surfaces
Bleach
It is a product often used around the house but not everyone knows that it can damage stainless steel surfaces
Products containing chloride
They harm the protective finish of shiny surfaces
Oven cleaners
These products are very harsh, because they are produced to clean really stubborn stains
Grimey tap water
If your tap water is gritty or with a high content of calcium, it can leave white or brownish stains after rinsing and drying.
You can use special stainless steel cleaners. As a precaution though, read the instructions before cleaning. Try the cleaner on a small test surface to see how it performs. Another option is to make a natural cleaner with white vinegar and water. For stains, apply some baking soda and wipe it gently. If you need to remove some fingerprints, it is safe to spray with glass cleaner.

2. Do not use brushes, that will scratch the stainless steel surfaces.

Scratching your stainless steel surface won’t juts damage it but also make is susceptible to staining. Make sure you don’t use these materials on stainless steel:

Steel wool
Steel brushes
Wire brushes
Steel scouring pads
Highly abrasive scrubbing pads

Materials that are safe when cleaning stainless steel surfaces may be a synthetic scouring pad, soft sponge or microfiber cloth. You can also use an old toothbrush for stains or some tiny spaces that need gently brushing.

3. Do not forget to polish and dry after cleaning.

If you want to maintain that shiny new look of your stainless steel surfaces, you need to polish them with cleaning products designed for stainless steel. It’s always useful to wipe the stainless with a soft cloth in the same direction as the “grain lines” to give it a nice even finish. You can polish these surfaces with silicone-based products or polishing pastes that are specially made for this use. You can also use some common oils that you have in your household such as olive oil, lemon oil or baby oil. Finish with a paper towel to dry the surface. Be aware that polishing is made mainly on decorative stainless steel elements, which excludes materials where food is prepared.
Stainless steel is one of the hardest surfaces to clean, because it requires very specific treatment. If you do it right, the sparkling results are worth it!

Want to know how to carry out an end of tenancy clean ? Before you get started on the task of end of tenancy cleaning there are a couple of things you should do first. Follow these steps to ensure it is done properly.

Delegate work load
The main thing to do first is to decide who is going to be doing the actual cleaning work

Make a list
If you have decided to do the end of tenancy cleaning yourself, it is probably a good idea to go around the entire property with a pen and pad and make a comprehensive list of all the items that require cleaning. By taking this approach their is less likelihood that any items or surfaces will be missed out and consequently picked up by your landlord or their managing agents when the property inventory check is carried out.

Equipment and materials
Once you have gone around and are satisfied that you have a list of works that covers everything, the next step is to ensure you have all the required cleaning materials and equipment for the job. What will happen if you are not fully prepared is ie. that when it comes to removal of limescale from the taps and shower head or removal of burnt on grease from the oven, without the right products you will spend hours scrubbing to no avail.

Make sure you’re fully prepared
Before you actually schedule your work, you will want to make sure all the kitchen cabinets are cleared and also the fridge and that any other items are cleared off the surfaces. This will make the cleaning work much easier than if you try to move things as you go along. Once you are confident that you have all the cleaning products required you should be ready to start cleaning.

If you want any tips from a professional London cleaning company on end of tenancy clean, the best one we can offer, is to tackle the hardest areas first. These are normally the kitchen and bathrooms as these take the most effort and time. Try to get these areas done first while you are fresh and have plenty of energy, you do not want to be tackling the heaviest cleaning tasks when you are getting tired. The bedrooms and living spaces should be lighter work so leave them to last.
Most landlords and their managing agents these days will expect the property to be cleaned to a professional standard through a tenancy clean. Failure to reach the standard will almost certainly result in financial penalties for the excess work that is specified, or the agents may well appoint their own cleaning firm to re-clean the whole property. This can be costly for the vacating tenant because management fees may well be added to the cleaning firms cost for the agents time. It will also render your own efforts a waste of time as you will be liable to meet the full cleaning costs.
