Welcome to Catford! Can anyone name the chap who ran this South East London branch of Welford's Surrey Dairies? (116 Bromley road) He looks exhausted from stacking all the shop window products - but a good job done.

A rare dairy-company combination in one location - Welford & Sons and J. Richards - shown here at 83 Haverstock Hill (north London - east of Belsize Park, north of Chalk Farm and west of Kentish Town). All the milkcarts have the J. Richard name on their port sides, presumably Welford on the starboard!? (Rocky Media Archives - ebay)

A Royal Visit to Welford & Sons- 27th Feb 1886

The Princess Louise, Marquis of Lorne and suite, recently visited Messrs. Welford & Sons Dairy Establishment, Elgin-road, Maida Vale.

The Princess and Marquis of Lorne were received at the entrance by Mr. John Welford, Miss Edith Welford (aged 2½ years), the youthful daughter of Mr J. Welford, presenting her Royal Highness with a basket of flowers. She kissed the little maid, and thanked her for her pretty present. The company were then shown all the arrangements of the Dairy, the Creaming and Butter Departments, various kinds of butter churns in operation, the process of making Devonshire clotted cream, cream cheese, &c., and all the methods and working of a practical scientific dairy on a large scale. The model dwellings for the employees, machinery, can washing, &c., were all inspected by her Royal Highness, and of which she expressed a most lively satisfaction. The sanitary arrangements were also shown and highly approved of. Then followed a visit to the goats, sheep, cows, horses, &c. the same being much admired. On the return to the dairy, Miss Annie Welford, eldest daughter of Mr. John Welford, presented her Royal Highness with a pretty basket of fresh butter (made during the visit), cream, and new laid eggs, very tastefully arranged. H.R.H was here introduced to Messrs. Robert and Richard Welford, and on taking her departure was most enthusiastically cheered by the immense crowd congregated outside.

It's February 18th, 1925. Branch Managers and Directors from Welford's and Premier Dairies enjoy a joint dinner at Beale's Restaurant in Holloway Road. (A large five storey building in Holloway containing a restaurant, grill room, banqueting suites, baker and departments selling a complete range of groceries and provisions, rather like a suburban Fortnum and Mason.)
Perhaps you had an ancestor who was a manager then - can you find him amongst the faces here. Not one woman in the picture, such a sign of the times nearly a century ago, there must have been female dairy managers. This antique photographic record was kindly posted to us by the extremely generous Terry Page. Thank you Terry!

A beautiful and striking group portrait (painted around 1856) featuring the Welford family: (top row) Sarah (born 1850), to mother Jane (née Neale) and husband to Richard Welford (1817-1858); (bottom row) twins, and future Welford & Sons’ managers, Frederick Robert and Richard William Welford (born 1852 in Paddington) either side of their younger sister Jane Elizabeth Welford (b 1854).

Thank you to Becky Crockett and to her great-great-grandmother for sharing this wonderful and colourful image.
