This vintage antique tin and brass milk or cream can recently sold on eBay. If you inspect the clearly-stamped lettering displaying possibly its most southerly branch on the Brighton Road in Coulsdon, the letter spacing and alignment weren't of paramount importance on that particular day of manufacture! Dating from 1890-1910, the can's triangular brass flap served a dual utility purpose: firstly an anti-spill hinge: it reinforced the lid's tension, preventing milk or cream from slopping out during cart deliveries; and secondly for cart mounting: the cutout design allowed the deliveryman to easily hook the smaller container onto a milk cart or a much larger master transport churn. The "Hanamada REGISTERED" mark (Handmade?) is a stamp specifically struck onto the heavy brass triangle hinge of late-Victorian and Edwardian hand-delivered cream cans.It signifies a registered hardware design or trademark rather than the dairy itself. Get your cream order in today to have with your strawberries!

Welcome to Catford! Can anyone name the chap who ran this South East London branch of Welford's Surrey Dairies? (116 Bromley road) He looks exhausted from stacking all the shop window products - but a good job done.
