A small splash can create a significant exposure risk when cleaners are working with chemicals, contaminated liquids or hazardous materials.

Before starting a task, cleaners should understand what could splash, where it could travel and which areas of the body could be exposed.

Suitable controls may include eye protection, face protection, gloves, protective clothing and changes to the working method itself.

Behind every difficult clean is a human story.

Specialist cleaners may attend hoarding properties, trauma scenes, biohazard incidents and other environments that can be extremely difficult to see and process.

These situations can affect the people carrying out the work. But they can also represent and incredibly difficult moment in somebody else's life.

A hoarded home may belong to someone who is feeling incredibly overwhelmed.
A trauma clean may take place while a family is grieving.

Professional specialist cleaning therefore requires more than PPE, chemicals and cleaning techniques. It also requires discretion, understanding, professionalism and respect.

This World Mental Health Day, NASC recognises the human impact on both sides of specialist cleaning.

Previous delegates will be invited to return for refresher training every three years, helping them revisit important skills, refresh their knowledge and reinforce safe, professional working practices.

A thorough risk assessment helps technicians identify hazards, decide what control measures are required and determine how the work can be completed safely.

From chemical exposure and biohazards to sharps, manual handling, slips, trips and PPE requirements, every environment can present different risks.

Why should you never mix cleaning chemicals?

Mixing two cleaning products might seem like a way to create a stronger cleaner, but certain chemical combinations can be extremely dangerous.

They may produce toxic gases, harmful fumes, excessive heat or other unexpected reactions. One important example is bleach, which should never be mixed with acidic cleaners or products containing ammonia.

Professional cleaners should always read product labels, follow the manufacturers dilutions instructions, use the correct PPE and follow relevant COSHH procedures and risk assessments.

Chemicals should also remain in their original, clearly labelled containers and should never be mixed unless the manufacturer specifically confirms that doing so is safe.

At The National Academy of Specialist Cleaners, we believe professional cleaning is about understanding the science and safety behind the products being used - not simply knowing how to apply them.

The right products, used in the right way, is always better than creating a stronger mixture.
