Side-by-side transformation 👇

A full room brought back to life with dry ice blasting. The before shows years of dark staining, soot and build-up masking the character of these original beams — while the after reveals a clean, natural finish that completely lifts the space.

Using a non-abrasive, sympathetic process, we’ve removed the contamination without damaging the timber, preserving the original grain, texture and integrity of the wood. No harsh sanding, no chemicals — just a precise clean using thermal shock.

The difference speaks for itself — brighter, cleaner, and true to the building’s heritage.

Cleaned back to its natural finish 👇

This timber had heavy staining that was deeply embedded into the surface, affecting both the appearance and overall finish of the beam. Using dry ice blasting, we were able to carefully lift and remove the staining without damaging the wood underneath.

Because the process is non-abrasive, it allows us to clean the surface while preserving the natural grain and texture — no sanding, and no unnecessary material loss.

The result is a clean, even finish that restores the timber back to its natural look, ready for the next stage of the project.

Watch the process unfold 👇

Dry ice blasting is one of the most effective ways to clean and restore timber without compromising its original surface. In this clip, you can see how quickly layers of built-up grime and coatings are removed, revealing the natural material underneath.

What makes this method stand out is its non-abrasive nature — there’s no sanding, no harsh scraping, and no damage to the grain. Instead, the extreme cold of the dry ice creates a reaction that breaks the bond between the contamination and the surface, allowing it to be lifted away with precision.

It’s a clean, efficient and highly controlled solution — perfect for restoration projects where preserving detail and authenticity is everything.

Dry ice blasting in action 💨

This is where the transformation really happens. Using dry ice blasting, we’re able to strip away years of dirt, paint and contamination in a precise, controlled and completely non-abrasive way.

The process works through thermal shock — the dry ice pellets rapidly cool the surface, causing coatings to crack and release, while the material itself remains untouched. As the dry ice sublimates on impact, there’s no water, no harsh chemicals, and no secondary waste, making it ideal for sensitive restoration work.

It’s a fast, efficient and incredibly clean method that reveals the true character of the timber beneath — exactly what’s needed for high-quality heritage restoration.

Restoring original timber the right way.

In this project we’re using dry ice blasting to carefully clean historic beams before they go back into a restoration. Over time timber can accumulate layers of soot, grime, old finishes and contamination that hide the natural character of the wood.

Dry ice blasting is the perfect solution for heritage work because it’s a sympathetic, non-abrasive cleaning method. The process works through thermal shock — the dry ice pellets rapidly cool the surface, causing the unwanted coatings and contamination to lift away without damaging the timber beneath. Because the dry ice sublimates (turns directly from solid to gas), there’s no secondary waste and no moisture introduced to the wood.

This allows us to reveal the beam’s natural colour, grain and historic character while preserving the integrity of the timber — making it ready to be reused as part of the building’s restoration.

At Heritage Dry Ice Blasting, we specialise in sensitive cleaning for restoration and conservation projects where protecting the original material is essential.
