You may be aware that from 29th June 2026, SMDC will no longer allow food waste to be placed in brown bins. Instead, every household will receive a food waste caddy, which will be emptied weekly. SMDC will also be introducing a charge for brown bin collections:

We want to make this transition as simple and hassle-free as possible for you, so we will adapt our cleaning service to best suit you.

Customer feedback has highlighted two points:

Concerns around hygiene, odours, and the risk of the new outdoor food bins attracting flies and vermin. In response, we’ll clean your new outdoor food bin once a month, this will cost you less than the other bins, being only £4

Many customers have also confirmed they will continue using their brown bins. Where this is the case, we will continue to clean your brown bin(s) as normal.

There is nothing you need to do at this stage unless you would prefer not to have your food caddy cleaned.
