Plastic migration on vinyl floors from rubber is a well-known, permanent chemical reaction, not a surface stain or dirt issue.
What’s actually happening?
• Vinyl (PVC) flooring contains plasticisers to keep it flexible.
• Rubber products (door mats, gym mats, furniture feet, castor wheels, appliance feet) also contain plasticisers and sulphur compounds.
• When rubber sits on vinyl, plasticisers migrate between the two materials.
• This causes a chemical reaction inside the vinyl, not on the surface.
The result is usually:
• Yellow, brown, or dark shadowing
• “Ghost” shapes of mats or feet
• Discolouration that mirrors the rubber object exactly
Why it cannot be cleaned away
This is not contamination on top of the floor.
The plasticiser migration:
• Penetrates into the vinyl wear layer
• Alters the polymer structure
• Causes irreversible colour change
No amount of:
• Alkaline cleaners
• Solvent cleaners
• St*****rs
• Abrasion or scrubbing
will remove it — attempts often make it worse by driving the reaction deeper or damaging the wear layer.
Common culprits
• Black rubber door mats (worst offender)
• Anti-slip rubber matting
• Gym / treadmill mats
• Washing machine or fridge feet
• Office chair wheels
• Furniture feet with rubber pads
⚠️ Black rubber is especially problematic due to carbon black and sulphur content.
Can it be fixed?
In most cases: no.
Options are limited to:
• Replacing affected tiles / planks
• Covering with a compatible floor finish (short-term cosmetic improvement only)
• Full floor replacement in severe cases
Some coatings may temporarily mask the appearance, but migration can continue underneath and reappear.
How to prevent plastic migration
• Never place rubber-backed mats on vinyl floors
• Use PVC-safe mats labelled “non-staining”
• Place a barrier layer (felt, acrylic sheet, textile mat) between rubber and vinyl
• Use nylon or felt furniture feet, not rubber
• Rotate mats and appliances periodically
• Avoid prolonged static contact with unknown materials
Key takeaway (important for clients)
Plastic migration damage is:
• ❌ Not a cleaning failure
• ❌ Not wear and tear
• ❌ Not recoverable
Husband stored brand new car tyres in the kitchen for 48hrs. They've left this horrendous mark that I can't shift! I've used everything I can think of... any idea?
