This was not what I was expecting when we arrived at the last job of the day. One massive birds nest - 8 sacks of twigs removed! Started in daylight, finished in darkness

🚨 Carbon Monoxide Alarm🚨

Last week, we attended an incident that serves as an important reminder of the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO). A family were at home, about to go to bed when their carbon monoxide alarm suddenly sounded! They called 999 and Fire Control advised them to leave the property immediately and wait outside in fresh air.

When we arrived, the family were feeling unwell, showing signs of carbon monoxide poisoning—shortness of breath and nausea. Wearing Breathing Apparatus our crews checked the property and confirmed high levels of this invisible, odourless, and deadly gas. Had they not had an alarm to warn them, the outcome could have been very different!

Carbon monoxide (CO) is the most common form of household poison. You can't see it, taste it or smell it. Carbon monoxide poisoning can be fatal or cause permanent damage to your health‼️

What to do if a carbon monoxide alarm goes off

🚨If your carbon monoxide alarm is beeping, immediately get out of the building and call the relevant helpline for the fuel type. The gas emergency helpline is 0800 111 999.

☎️Call a registered engineer to check all your fuel-burning appliances.

🚒🚑In a medical emergency, don't delay, call 999 immediately.

What is carbon monoxide poisoning?

The early symptoms of poisoning can be easily confused with many common ailments and can develop quickly or over a number of days or months.

Look out for:

🤕a headache - this is the most common symptom

🥴feeling sick, dizzy, tired and confused

🤢being sick and having stomach pain

😮‍💨shortness of breath and difficulty breathing

If you think you have carbon monoxide poisoning, you should:

🏃🏽‍♂️leave the building immediately and get out into the fresh air.

🎛️switch off all your fuel-burning appliances and open windows on your way out.

🏥seek urgent medical advice from either your GP (for low levels of carbon monoxide) or your Accident and Emergency department if you think you have been exposed to high levels.

⚠️If you think there is an immediate danger, call the Gas Emergency Helpline on 0800 111 999 or the relevant service for your area.

It's not just birds that cause blockages in chimneys.
These cobwebs had become so thick inside the flue they had stopped it from drawing properly.

Another large nest removed from a flue. The nest was soaking wet which can act like a sponge causing major damp problems. Now the nest has been removed it should be able to breathe and dry out again.

Another Friday, another birds nest.
This was in a stove that had filled the room with smoke when the customer lit it. Luckily it didn't all catch fire!

This was just half of a nest I removed on Friday.
Luckily the customer had seen the birds dropping twigs down the chimney so had it swept before lighting the fire.

This was part of a DIY register plate and flue installation. The sweeping hatch was made of slates screwed together with batten.
New owners were very lucky they had it checked out before use - there were already scorch marks on the timber.
New flue liner and register plate (minus the wood) to be fitted ready for the customer to use the appliance safely.

Had this sent to me today by a customer 🙂
