🛑 DETAILERS DILEMMA: When "Polishing It Out" Isn't an Option.
​Ever seen a car covered in dried-up, baked-on billboard sign paste? 🤯 That’s exactly what landed in the studio this week.
​A lot of people think a dual-action polisher and a heavy compound can fix just about anything. But part of being a professional automotive aesthetic specialist isn't just knowing how to machine polish. It’s knowing exactly when to lift the machine off the paint.
​Take a close look at this test spot under the lights. 🔍
​See those tiny, web-like fractures right where the light reflects? That isn't just a deep scratch. It’s Clearcoat Failure (often called crow’s feet or checking).
​🧬 What happened here?
​When the heavy adhesive paste dried out on the panel, it contracted with massive physical force. Combined with baking in the sun, that tension literally pulled and cracked the clearcoat layer apart, splitting it right down to the base coat.
​🛠️ Can it be machine polished?
​Unfortunately, no. If we kept compounding or tried to wet-sand this, we would thin out the remaining clearcoat, widen the cracks, and quickly strike through the paint.
​The only true fix for deep clearcoat fracturing like this is a trip to the body shop for a mechanical strip-down and a fresh respray.
​Before you chase a defect too far, always run a localized test spot and trust what the paint is telling you. Protecting the integrity of the vehicle always comes first!
