It's getting colder, and mice and rats are looking for somewhere warm. Most of them get in through gaps you'd never notice.

Take five minutes to walk round the outside of your house and check:
- Gaps around pipes and cables where they go through the wall. A mouse only needs a gap about the size of a pen.
- Air bricks with big holes or broken grilles
- Gaps under doors and around garage doors

From dirty, dropping-covered insulation to a clean loft, ready for a fresh start. Here's a job we finished this week in Bishop's Waltham.

The old loft insulation had been fouled by rodents, so it all had to come out. We stripped it out and had the contaminated insulation collected and taken away. Then we hoovered up the droppings and debris and finished with a full disinfectant spray, so the new insulation can go down on a clean loft.

While we were up there we also spotted woodworm in the joists (you can see the little exit holes in the second photo), so we've recommended a woodworm treatment before it goes any further.

Getting the Christmas decorations down from the loft soon? Take two minutes to check for pests while you're up there.

Look for:
- Small round holes and fine powdery dust on the rafters and joists, which can be woodworm
- Droppings, chewed insulation or nibbled boxes, which mean rats or mice
- Scratching or scurrying noises in the early morning, often squirrels

Spot something? Don't wait until spring. Catching it early usually means a quicker, simpler fix.

Rats in the ceiling, seven indoor cats, and no poison allowed. Here's how we tackled a job in Fleet this month.

The homeowner could hear rats in the ceiling between the kitchen and the bathroom, and had spotted a few large holes outside. With seven cats in the house and plenty more in the neighbourhood, bait wasn't an option, so we used snap traps in secure boxes outside instead.

On the follow-up visit the noises were still there, so we took a closer look at the drains. We found signs of damaged pipes, which is one of the most common ways rats get into ceilings and walls. We've recommended a CCTV drain survey and non-return rat valves, so they can't keep coming back up the pipes.

£28,000 a year to start, rising as you train, plus overtime at time and a half

Want to become a pest controller? We're looking for someone keen to learn the trade from scratch. You don't need any experience or qualifications, because we'll give you all the training you need, including the RSPH Level 2 Award in Pest Management.

What you'll do: You'll work as a mobile technician visiting homes and businesses across our area and dealing with rodents, insects, wasps and other pests.

What we offer:
- A starting salary of £28,000 a year
- Pay that goes up as you progress through your training and gain your qualifications
- Full paid training, including the RSPH Level 2 award
- 40 hours a week, worked between 8am and 6pm
- Overtime at time and a half
- 28 days' holiday including bank holidays
- A company van, tools, uniform and PPE
- A workplace pension

What you need:
- A full UK driving licence held for at least one year, and you must live in or near Southampton or Alton
- A willingness to learn, a reliable attitude and good manners with customers

Today, the RS Pest Control team is in Southampton carrying out a full bed bug heat treatment in a five-bedroom HMO.

THE LIFE CYCLE OF A FLEA

Did you know that the adult fleas you see are only a small part of the infestation?

A flea’s life cycle has four stages:

1. Eggs – Laid on the animal before falling into carpets, bedding and furniture.
2. Larvae – These hatch and hide deep within carpets, floorboards and other dark areas.
3. Pupae – Fleas develop inside a protective cocoon and can remain dormant for several months.
4. Adult fleas – Heat, movement and carbon dioxide can trigger them to emerge and find a host.

This is why simply treating your pet may not solve the problem. A successful flea treatment must target the property as well as ensuring that every pet receives suitable veterinary flea treatment.
