Creosote builds up faster when burning softwood. Mix in hardwood for cleaner burns.

I regularly see posts on log burner chat pages where the log burner is burning red hot.

A log burner glowing red is not normal and can be dangerous. It’s usually a sign of overfiring, meaning the stove is running far too hot and the metal is beginning to glow from excessive heat. This can damage the stove, warp components, and increase the risk of a chimney fire.

🔥 What a red glow usually means
- Overfiring — when too much fuel or too much air causes the stove to burn hotter than it’s designed for. This can make the body or internal parts glow red.
- Internal components overheating — such as the baffle plate glowing red, which is a warning sign that something is wrong with the burn rate or airflow.
- Chimney fire risk — if the stovepipe itself glows red, it can indicate creosote inside the flue has ignited, which is extremely dangerous.

⚠️ What to do immediately
- Reduce the air supply to bring the temperature down.
- Let the fire burn down naturally — don’t add more fuel.
- Check for unusual noises, smoke, or smells that could indicate a chimney fire.
- Have the stove and chimney inspected before using it again if the glow was significant.

🧭 How to prevent it happening again
- Use seasoned wood and avoid overloading the stove.
- Keep air vents adjusted so the fire isn’t burning too fiercely.
- Ensure the chimney is swept regularly to prevent creosote build‑up.
- Follow manufacturer guidance on safe operating temperatures.

Be safe using your fire, and ensure regular sweeps take place.

CreAway Creosote and Tar Modifier

Did you know I am able to offer the CreAway treatment for customers.

If you have an issue with tar and creosote within your chimney sometimes even us professional chimney sweeps can struggle to remove it by a sweep alone.

CreAway creosote modifier offers a solution that is applied to break down the tar and creosote so that it can be removed.

Creosote can cause long term damage if left in the chimney:

* Causing acid erosion of the lime mortar and reducing structural integrity leading to leakage.
* Closing down the chimney reducing the performance.
* Increases the chance of a chimney fire that can lead to relining or costly repairs.

Prices vary depending on the size of your chimney, access and your location, plus the cost of a sweep. If you have creosote/tar this can be a much cheaper alternative to replacing the flue/liner.

Once the application has been applied you simply have fires in your stove or fireplace for 2-3 hours per day for 3 / 4 days.

This heating process creates a chemical reaction modifying the tar and creosote into a dry crystallised structure that can simply be swept out.

We would recommend you book your sweep one week after the application and having a fire for 2-3 hours per day until the day of the sweep for the best results.
