🤖 Tesco is rolling out autonomous cleaning robots across 600 Express stores.

And while the technology is interesting, the bigger story might be what it says about modern operations.

As costs rise and teams come under increasing pressure, businesses are looking more closely at the tasks that keep sites clean, safe and running efficiently.

Because whether it's a supermarket, restaurant, pub or commercial kitchen, the basics still matter.

Clean environments.
Well-maintained equipment.
Consistent operational standards.

The technology may change, but the goal stays the same.
Creating spaces that are safe, efficient and ready for customers.
Do you think we'll see more automation in hospitality over the next few years?

🍽️ One thing hospitality teaches you very quickly...

The phrase "it'll be fine" is usually followed by absolute chaos 😅

The extraction decides today is the day.
The dishwasher starts making a strange noise.
The delivery is late.
The kitchen is full.
The restaurant is busy.
And somehow service still goes ahead.

That's probably one of the things we admire most about hospitality teams.

No matter what's happening behind the scenes, they find a way to keep things moving.

Which is exactly why the small operational details matter so much.

We've written about it👇

What's the most memorable "it'll be fine" moment you've had at work? 😂

Hospitality costs are rising and margins are tight. Discover how small operational changes like maintenance, airflow and filtration can reduce costs and improve kitchen efficiency.

🏖️ Imagine planning a family holiday in the UK...

Then discovering it's going to cost even more before you've even checked into the hotel.

That's the concern being raised around proposals for a new visitor levy, with hospitality groups warning it could make UK breaks less competitive at a time when many businesses are already under pressure.

The debate isn't really about a single tax.

It's about how attractive the UK remains as a destination when consumers are comparing prices, experiences and value for money.

Because in hospitality, small increases don't always stay small.

They often influence decisions about where people go, how long they stay and how much they spend.

UKHospitality recently ran a drop in event in Parliament for MPs to learn about how the holiday tax will impact businesses, local jobs and high street spending in their constituency.

🍽️ Everyone talks about the hospitality staffing challenge. But what if part of the problem is further down the pipeline?

Industry leaders are warning that rising employment costs are making it harder for businesses to hire and train inexperienced young people, traditionally one of hospitality's biggest talent pools. One estimate suggests policy changes have added around £4,000 to the annual cost of employing a young worker.

That's significant when you're already balancing rising food costs, energy bills and tight margins.

Because today's kitchen porter, waiter or bar staff member could easily become tomorrow's head chef, general manager or business owner.

If fewer businesses can afford to take that first chance on somebody, what does that mean for the future of the industry?

🍽️ Hospitality employs millions of people, supports local communities and plays a huge role in the UK's economy.

Yet it feels like one of the few sectors that spends most of its time talking about survival rather than growth.

Recent calls from industry leaders for greater support reflect the pressures many operators continue to face, from labour costs and business rates through to energy prices and squeezed consumer spending.

The challenge isn't usually one big cost.
It's lots of smaller costs adding up at the same time.

Which is why operational efficiency has become such a focus for many businesses.

Because when margins are tight, reducing waste, improving performance and staying ahead of maintenance issues can make a bigger difference than people realise.

Sometimes the smallest efficiencies have the biggest impact.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has thanked hospitality operators for their “hard work”, and urged industry leaders to work with government “consistently and constructively”

⚽ The Government has already announced plans to extend pub opening hours if England (or another home nation) makes it to the latter stages of the World Cup.

Optimistic? Maybe.
Good news for hospitality? Definitely.

Because major tournaments don't just bring football fans together. They bring extra footfall, packed venues, longer trading hours and a welcome boost for pubs, bars and restaurants.

The real question is...

How far do you think England will get? 👀

🏆 Winners?
🥈 Final?
⚽ Semi-final?
😬 Out in the groups?

⚽ Quick poll before the kick off tonight...

What's harder to manage on an England match day?
🍺 The bar
🍔 The kitchen
😅 The customers after a last-minute winner

Major tournaments are brilliant for pubs, bars and restaurants.

But they also create a very specific kind of pressure.
Everyone arrives at once.
Everyone wants serving at half-time.
And everyone suddenly decides they need food five minutes before kick-off.

While the rest of us are focused on the football, hospitality teams are busy pulling off a logistical masterclass behind the scenes.

Who's working through today's match? 👇

📢 100,000 signatures in just a few days.

That's how many people have already backed calls to reduce hospitality VAT from 20% to 10%.

Whatever your view on tax policy, one thing is clear.

The industry is under pressure.
Rising labour costs.
Higher energy bills.
Increasing operating costs.
Tighter margins.

When businesses are working harder to protect profitability, efficiency becomes more important than ever.

And that's often where the less visible parts of an operation start to matter.

The systems nobody notices when they're working properly are usually the first things that get attention when costs are under the microscope.

What's the biggest challenge facing hospitality operators right now?

Tom Kerridge's campaign receives huge support from across the sector in first three days to cut hospitality VAT.

☀️ Could this be the summer hospitality has been waiting for?

New research suggests UK staycations could deliver a £9.1 billion boost to the hospitality sector this summer, with millions of Brits choosing to holiday closer to home. Meanwhile, more than 15 million people are expected to watch at least one World Cup match in a pub or bar.

For hospitality businesses, that's obviously welcome news.

But busy periods bring their own challenges.

More covers.
More pressure on teams.
Longer opening hours.
Hotter kitchens.
Equipment working harder than usual.

When demand increases, it's often the behind-the-scenes systems that get tested first.

Because while customers see a busy restaurant, operators see extraction systems, ventilation, maintenance schedules and energy bills all working overtime.

Here's hoping it's a strong summer for the sector 🍻

🍽️ What if cutting VAT from 20% to 10% could help save hospitality businesses?

That's exactly what some of the UK's best-known chefs are calling for this week, as they warn the industry is facing some of the toughest conditions they've ever experienced.

And honestly, the backdrop is pretty sobering.

Industry figures suggest three hospitality businesses are closing every day in 2026.

Not because restaurants and pubs have suddenly become unpopular.

But because operators are trying to balance rising wages, higher employment costs, business rates, energy bills and changing consumer spending habits... all at the same time.

Whether VAT is the answer or not, one thing feels hard to argue with... hospitality is operating with very little room for error, and when margins become that tight, even small costs and inefficiencies start to matter a lot more than they used to.

Would reducing VAT to 10% make a meaningful difference to hospitality businesses?

Tom Kerridge, Yotam Ottolenghi, Ravneet Gill and Simon Rogan told BBC Newsnight VAT should be halved to ease mounting pressure on the hospitality industry.
