Equipment and Adaptations in Sheffield

Disabled people can find it difficult to get the equipment or adaptations they need to be able to live independently at home.

Barriers can be caused by not having information about the products and services available, eligibility and who to contact to get help.

For general information you can contact Sheffield City Council’s Health and Housing Team on ( 0114 ) 273 5522.

If you spend time in hospital due to an accident, sudden illness or planned admission you should be asked for information about your home circumstances and how you manage at home.

Your GP or other health professional may also be able to arrange equipment and adaptations to suit your requirements e.g. walking frames, crutches or wheelchairs and incontinence supplies.

For an assessment of any requirements, you can contact Sheffield City Council, First Contact, Howden House, 1 Union Street, Sheffield, S1 2SH on ( 0114 ) 273 4908 or email [email protected]

Alternatively, you can visit the First Contact reception at Howden House on Union Street in Sheffield city centre from Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5.30 pm.

The team will forward your application to the Equipment and Adaptations service who will arrange for an occupational therapist to visit you in your home to carry out the assessment within 3 months.

Help and advice for carers

It is very important that carers take regular breaks and manage their own mental and physical health.

Putting yourself in the position of the person you are caring for can help you to get an understanding of how they feel, which may help you to empathise with them.

Sometimes you may that your patient or loved one is being particularly difficult, even though you are doing your best to care for them, but if you stop for a second and think about how things look to them you may begin to see things from their perspective.

How would you feel if you woke up surrounded by a sea of unfamiliar faces who claim to be your family? What would it feel like to be forced to depend on another person just to be able to relieve yourself? What would it be like to be bed-bound the majority of the time, unable to walk anywhere alone?

In these moments, it is important to remember why you decided to become a carer in the first place. Remind yourself of the difference that you are making in this person’s life and how you are allowing them to live the highest quality of life possible in their condition.
Rest

Always remember to rest. If you find yourself feeling upset or tired when caring for your patient or loved one, try and step away for a moment.

Even just a small break can give you enough time to get some perspective.

Try and find someone else who can help you care for the person, should you not be able to. Asking a neighbour or family member to take over for even just a few hours can give you time to recover.

Taking care of yourself allows you to better care for others.

You know yourself better than anyone else does. Treat yourself the same way you would treat the loved ones that you care for. Listen to your body and don’t push your thoughts and feelings to the side.

Sometimes when taking care of a person who suffers from a chronic condition or whose health is continuously declining, it is easy to feel discouraged.

But every day that you choose to dedicate energy, love, and passion towards caring for others, you are shining a light into someone’s life and making a difference.

Spring is here!

After a long, cold winter getting outdoors can provide a big health and mental boost for older people when spring arrives.

Here are some spring activities that are ideal for older people, and which younger relatives can also help with:

feeding birds outside, or ducks by a pond. Or you could fill bird feeders and watch the wildlife they attract in the garden

planting a garden, or even just adding some new potted herbs and plants

just walking outside, around the neighborhood, in a park or nearby countryside. Why not offer to drive an elderly relative to nearby accesible public footpaths for a walk together?

sitting outside on a patio or garden

exercising outdoors. For aging adults, this may consist of simple stretches or other exercises that are easy on the joints, or that correspond to the person’s level of fitness.

going fishing. If this is something your loved one enjoyed when they were younger, there’s no reason for them to give it up now if you can help them to do it

people-watching. Simply observing people at a park, outdoor café, or another public place can be good for older adults whose health limits other forms of social entertainment

attending an open-air concert, film, or event during the warmer months

visiting an outdoor market
