Tonight's Pick Walk is Humberston Fitties & Beach.

We were running out of time today to get our second walk done, so we opted for the beach. It's a high tide and we just about missed its highest point, but still had time to do a little cleanup.

Some people still don't realise, leave only footprints! We found some broken beach toys and part of a kite and string left here. ๐Ÿ˜ž

The newly erected beach fence posts by Frank Sparkes are looking good and have held up well! If you don't know who Frank is, you are missing out on a true Grimsby legend. Civic awards winner Frank is also on Facebook and also does a brilliant job keeping the area clean and tidy. I'll add a link to his page in the comments below so you can check him out if you want to further support his work. He's been doing this for over 25 years!

We hardly got any litter today, but there was hardly any beach so I can't say it's a good comparison. The next beach clean is this upcoming Saturday a little further down from where we started. There should be a lot of washed up stuff to clean up, we've seen just how high the water is!

This afternoons Pick Walk is Nettleton Woods, Market Rasen.

We last visited here in October for our Spooktober challenge. We said how little rubbish there was to be found and admired the tall and beautiful trees!

Unfortunately today was the opposite! Bad weather and soft soil had resulted in LOTS of fallen trees. ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

We also took a slightly different route towards the caravan park and found an area with some log benches and a tree swing, which obviously was covered in the typical kind of litter and glass. We filled a bag within the first hour and had to lug it the rest of the way around. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฅฑ (which is the worst thing to do when you start a walk)

Plenty of dog poo bags to be found here, seems like people still can't be trusted to do the right thing. ๐Ÿ’ฉ

We also found plenty of 'construction type' plastic bags and packaging, likely from the nearby static caravan park which looks to be expanding soon.

However, the woods was fairly dry compared to other woods. The trees are doing their jobs and it was lovely and quiet out there. It just seems like there were so many fallen trees and active forestry work going on here. I hope it doesn't get any worse out here, I love looking up at the tall tall trees. They truly are gigantic! ๐ŸŒฒ

Today's Pick Walk is Humberston Fitties Beach & Tetney Marshes.

Last nights incredibly high tide surged across our coast and battered the beaches. We headed down this morning to take a look and see what we could find. Tonight's tide is even higher, so we thought we'd grab as much as we can before it potentially gets buried or dragged back out.

Although the beach had a fair bit of washed up litter, it was the Tetney Marshes that surprised us! It had absolutely burst its bank and flooded the footpath with all manner of buried and trapped debris and litter. We even found 2 helium balloons in there! We ended up filling a bag from the beach and another bag just from the marshes. Lesson learned, check the Marshes as well as the beach next time!

We found some old litter on the beach, some from the 90s. We also found a tied up crisp packet which was very well preserved, you can find this on our stories (tap our icon!)

We also bumped into Frank Sparkes (The North Wall Legend) who was assessing the storm damage to some of the fencing by the coast. He and some volunteers have been untangling the mess and getting them put right. It's a hard job but he's got a great attitude and I'm sure they'll get it looking great again in no time.

We also bumped into a lovely lady called Claire who was talking to us about the environment and the wildlife, turns out we used to work together long ago and that was a nice surprise and trip down memory lane. Claire was telling us all about her rescue dog and the volunteer work she does for Greek Animal Rescue Charity. Claire has worked with this charity to help cats & dogs and has really made a difference by seeing first hand what it was like out there and then taking action to help out. Absolutely wonderful to hear and she does an amazing job helping those animals in need. If you are interested to learn more or would like to donate or are looking to adopt, please check the link in the comments below.

Another elderly gentleman saw us and said "It's satisfying isn't it?" (litter picking) and we absolutely agree. It really does help, especially if you have to see it on a constant basis and you take action, you benefit, and the wildlife!

This afternoons Pick Walk is Yarborough Estate, Grimsby.

Whilst on another mission today, we filled a bag with cans and bottles from around the streets and green areas.

Our reward for finding another helium balloon was to then spot a lovely little family of deer who passed us by.

The bins here were full, so we reported it via the NELC Report it portal:

https://www.nelincs.gov.uk/report-it/

We had to leave our bag by the bin with a note on to let them know this was litter picking and not fly tipping. We spotted some other full bins on the way home so we reported those too.

This evenings Pick Walk is Weelsby Woods, Grimsby.

Tonight's walk ended with me getting quite upset. A helium balloon high up in a tree taunted me for about 30 minutes. I tried everything to get it down but only managed to get most of the foil from the branch. The dangerous bit (the ribbon) is still up there, laughing at me. I may have to return with some tools to get it down. ๐Ÿ˜

We found some more vintage litter today, wotsits and double decker. I have a video coming up on my stories to where I found this, it is always surprising how these kind of things continue to evade me.

If you don't like sad news, don't scroll to the last picture. I did share this earlier but still, it's sad.

We put everything in the bin at the end when we were done and went home in a mood.

On the way out, we saw the newly restored Lion statue and it looks really good. That cheered us up.

This afternoons Pick Walk is Cleethorpes Country Park.

Thanks to a big cleanup operation that we posted about last week, this area is looking excellent and is definitely ready for spring. The bright colours in the growing vegetation are no longer crisp and sweet packets, but actual colourful flowers! ๐Ÿ’๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒน

We helped to keep on top of the lovely area and collected mainly fresh pieces of litter from around the park.

We spoke to a lovely elderly lady who also takes out a carrier bag to pickup some of the litter as she walks. She told us about a few areas which were bad. One that we just visited and cleared out a lot of glass. The other was a patch of trees and bushes just by the exit. She contacted the council who had came and cleaned it up, and it looks lovely now too. โค๏ธ

The wildlife POV photo came from something I saw do on one of his cleanups. Its a very interesting idea! We see litter as a couple of things that don't impact where we walk, but how would you like it if these bottles and cans were suddenly twice your size and clogging up your walkway? ๐Ÿค”

3 years ago today, we saw first hand the real danger and the impact of littering.

A new and inquisitive labrador puppy is learning about the world and to do so, is using her mouth. She's constantly picking things up, it's funny at first - she's got a plastic bottle! ๐Ÿ˜‚

But it quickly became no laughing matter.

Next she picked up...a full tube of superglue, and she bit down on it. Hard. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

Before we could even tell what had happened, super glue oozed out into her mouth and started to stick her tongue, gums and lips together. We frantically tried to wipe away as much as possible to remove as much as we could. We then rushed to the vets where an alcohol solution and a deep clean was performed to remove all the hardened excess of glue.

An unsettled night and an upset stomach followed. She made a full recovery a day later but one thing was on my mind. ๐Ÿšฎ

"Why was this on the floor? Why didn't it get put in the bin properly?!"

I understand now that the super glue was likely accidentally dropped from someones pocket but it sparked a change for us. The puppy keeps picking up litter and she's going to injure herself again if we aren't careful. So what if we just picked it up? ๐Ÿค”

We began picking up a few items every now and again, trying to spot the really dangerous things and put them into the bin before they caused any harm. It may save another pet owner a vet bill after all. ๐Ÿพ

Once you start to notice litter, you see more of it everywhere. Over the next few months we noticed more and more different kinds of potential problems left on the floor. We also began to understand that it's not just dogs at risk on walks, it's every bit of wildlife too! ๐Ÿ‘€ The news articles you read about wildlife injury in other parts of the world's were also happening right here!

As an example. We had lots of fun with a ring frisbee, what a laugh it was when she got it over her head and onto her neck. She was bamboozled. A quick pull and it was free, no harm done! ๐Ÿ˜‚

We soon after found a ring frisbee in Cleethorpes Country Park. It was thrown deep into the water and wrapped in fishing line.

If this kind of thing was left on the beach, then the tide takes it out and it could easily mean that the ring frisbee drifts to Donna Nook and becomes trapped around an inquisitive seal. There may not be anybody there to remove it and as the seal grows bigger, the ring slowly chokes them to death.

We decided to stop using ring frisbees and continue to remove abandoned toys, especially those with a strangulation risk, when we found them. Another thing to lookout for.

The very same goes for helium balloons, we would find these from time to time in fields but didn't truly know how many there were and how often these could be found. We decided to pick these up too. ๐ŸŽˆThey became yet another thing to lookout for.

It felt like by now, we should just pickup every single thing that does not belong there! These kind of things poses a risk to any living thing that comes across it.

So that's what we did. Eventually opening our social media page last year to share some of the things we had been up to and finding. We wanted to raise awareness so that the risks of these kind of injuries could be reduced if more people were aware of them and by sharing our message, more people may want to help out.

We got a proper litter picker from The Helping Hand Company and we started to try and fill bigger and bigger bags with as many things as possible.

Eventually we met new friends, joined new groups and we are so thankful to have had our eyes opened and to be able to make a difference, no matter how small. We've met some amazing locals who have never litter picked before, but now do it as part of their walks. So many people are actively doing this. It's so lovely everytime we see it.

So, that is how we came to be! We got asked this a lot, so I figured it was time we put it into writing!

I hope you enjoyed reading this. I also thought it would be good to give our new followers a bit of background info.

Thank you everyone for joining us on our little litter picking journey. Over 200 followers now!

Many thanks also to our new friends for continuing to inspire and push us, as well as all the other social media pages that individuals have setup around the country. I used to waste some of my weekends sat around indoors doing nothing, now I see inspiring cleanups and it helps get me moving.

If you want to get started. Just remember.

It's not all dirty work. You don't have to go all out and pickup every horrible thing you find on the floor if you don't want to. You can help out by doing something like spotting a frisbee on the beach that has no owner or a lonely bucket next to a crumbling sandcastle - the wildlife will be safer if you remove it. ๐Ÿ’š

Don't overwhelm yourself. What you choose to do or pick up next is up to you. If everyone does it, the benefits are multiplied massively.

We will be forever grateful if you think about this story next time you are out appreciating nature and you come across litter that could be easily and safely moved to a bin.

Thank you!!
