🚨 Jackdaw Nesting Season is Here! 🚨

I had my first phone call today and witnessed some jackdaws building a nest this morning!

As we head into spring and summer, jackdaws are on the lookout for safe, sheltered spots to nest — and unfortunately, chimneys are one of their favourite places 🐦🏠

If you hear scratching, flapping, or notice debris falling into your fireplace, there’s a good chance you’ve got some new (uninvited!) tenants.

⚠️ Important to know:
Jackdaws are protected under the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981, which means it is illegal to interfere with them while they are nesting.

❌ You cannot:
- Remove or disturb an active nest
- Block access to a chimney if birds are already nesting
- Use any method that could harm the birds, their eggs, or chicks

✅ You can:
- Have your chimney inspected to confirm activity
- Wait until the chicks have fledged (usually by mid–late summer)
- Book a chimney sweep and fit a chimney cowl once the nest is no longer active — this prevents future nesting

💡 Top tip: Prevention is key! Installing a properly fitted chimney cowl before nesting season begins is the best way to avoid problems altogether.

If you’re unsure whether you’ve got nesting birds or need advice, feel free to get in touch — happy to help 👍
