Have a look at this (not so) little beauty 👀🐝

A customer sent these pictures in over the weekend after finding her in their greenhouse. She's a European Hornet queen.

Although they can look a little intimidating, European Hornets are very rarely aggressive unless their nest is directly disturbed. They’re also hugely beneficial to the local ecosystem, especially for keen gardeners, helping to control other insect populations naturally.

And although not quite as effective as their bee cousins, they are also pollinators, particularly for night flowering plants.

After a quick chat with the customer, she was safely released to continue on her way.

Nature isn’t always something to fear, sometimes it just needs a little understanding.

🛠️ Proactive Pest Control – Solving the Cause, Not Just the Problem

A recent call out to deal with rat activity in a bin store area.

Rats require three essential things to survive:

• A food source
• Somewhere safe to live (harbourage)
• Water

Remove or limit just one of these, and you significantly reduce the chances of an infestation.

After assessing the site, it quickly became clear what the issue was. The drain valves in the bottom of the euro bins were missing, creating easy access to an ongoing food source. By installing purpose-designed bungs (see photo), these access points were eliminated. It’s a simple measure, but it makes a big difference - helping resolve the immediate issue and providing longer-term protection against reinfestation.

Effective pest control isn’t just about treatment. It’s about identifying how and why the problem started in the first place and putting practical measures in place to prevent it returning.

🐭Five common signs of a rodent infestation🐭

Rodents are experts at staying out of sight, but they always leave clues behind. Here are some of the most common signs to look out for in and around your home:

🔍 Sightings
It sounds obvious, but actually seeing a mouse or rat is the clearest sign of activity. Repeat sightings, especially during daylight hours, often point to a bigger underlying problem.

💩 Droppings
House mice can produce 50–80 droppings a day and aren’t fussy about where they leave them. These are often found in cupboards or food storage areas.
Brown rats produce around 30–50 droppings a day, but tend to use hidden “latrines”, making them harder to spot.

🏠 Burrows
Brown rats dig underground burrow systems for nesting, shelter and food storage. These are often found around buildings or in quiet, sheltered spots such as under bushes or sheds.

🐾 Runs
Rodents tend to stick to the same routes. Over time this creates visible tracks or “runs”, a bit like sheep trails on the fells.

🎧 Scratching or scurrying noises
Noises in walls, floors or ceilings, especially at night, are a common sign of rodents moving around indoors.
