A recent call-out to carry out a woodworm survey within a property's roof space.

Unfortunately, a heavy infestation of woodworm activity was identified throughout the roof timbers.

During the inspection, all roof rafters and ridge beams were also found to have exceptionally high moisture readings. Timber moisture levels above 20% can present a significant concern, potentially compromising the structural integrity of the timber and increasing the risk of deterioration or failure.

I have advised the client to seek the assistance of a damp specialist to identify and rectify the underlying source of moisture before any woodworm treatment is considered.

Potential causes of excess moisture can include:

Inadequate roof ventilation.
Damaged or slipped roof tiles.
Deteriorated roofing felt or membrane.
Defective lead flashing.
Roof leaks or other sources of water ingress.

It is always advisable to undertake appropriate surveys before purchasing a property where there is a potential woodworm issue.

A recent treatment was carried out following the identification of wood-boring insect activity within the oak engineered flooring.

Following inspection, the insect was identified as a wood-boring weevil. These insects are generally associated with damp and partially decayed timber and are typically restricted to timber where elevated moisture levels and/or fungal decay are present.

To prevent further activity, it is important to identify and address the underlying source of moisture and take appropriate measures to prevent continued dampness. Any timber or flooring found to be significantly affected or infested should also be considered for replacement and surrounding areas should be treated with a professional treatment.

Another deep clean recently completed by Absolute Vermination Pest Control.

The optimum breeding temperature for carpet moths is between 20°C and 25°C. However, infestations can occur throughout the year where indoor temperatures remain favourable.
Very hot & cold temperatures will kill all stages of the life cycle and this can be important for controlling.

The larval stage is responsible for all damage caused to natural fibre materials, including wool carpets, rugs, and garments.
Larvae feed on keratin, a protein found in animal-based fibres such as wool, feathers, fur, and hair.

Synthetic materials are generally not a preferred food source; however, thorough cleaning remains essential as accumulations of skin cells, pet hair, and other organic debris can provide sufficient nutrition for developing larvae.

Pheromone monitoring traps are recommended to help assess activity levels within infested areas. These traps capture male moths, helping to disrupt the breeding cycle when used alongside professional treatments, regular vacuuming, and good housekeeping practices.
Recommendations
Vacuum carpets, rugs, skirting boards, and furniture thoroughly and regularly.
Dispose of vacuum contents immediately after use.

Follow-up treatments may be required depending on the severity of the infestation and ongoing monitoring results.
