This amazing weather doesn’t exactly make you think of cozy evenings by the fire but just jogging everyone’s memories about getting your chimney swept ready for autumn. I’m taking bookings now for August and beyond. My customers from last year don’t need to worry, we will be in touch to see if you want appointments.
We are going to trial a new system to see if we can’t keep our prices the same for another year. If we can book your chimney sweep in on the same day as others in your area, we can keep fuel prices down and pass that saving on to you.
Don’t forget we also offer discounts to neighbours booking together as well as multiple flues in a single dwelling.
We still offer evening and weekend appointments at no extra cost.
If you don’t get a reply on the phone, leave a message, we will return your call. You can also message us on Facebook.
Enjoy the sun and we look forward to hearing from you!

It’s ‘that’ time of year again... the weather is already starting to feel autumnal.
Time to think about the annual chimney sweep. If you are already a customer, no worries, we will contact you to ensure you are given the opportunity to have your flue swept in time to keep your chimney certificate current. This is important to prevent chimney fires and also that should you be unfortunate and suffer a chimney fire, that your house insurance will cover you for damage caused, if you haven’t had the flue swept within the last 12 months, many may contest your claim.
If you haven’t had your chimney swept in the last 12 months or are concerned that a bird may have taken up residence in your flue or even just to ensure a trouble free chimney when you want a nice fire as the evenings draw in, please do call us, we are taking appointments now for late August and September. We do offer some evening and weekend calls if these are more convenient, these are at no extra cost to our normal charges.
Landlords may wish to consider chimneys at their rental properties. Your tenants may not be booking a Sweep. Their insurance may not cover your investment if a chimney fire occurs in an unswept chimney. We are happy to offer invoiced chimney services so that you have an invoice sent directly to you once the Sweep is completed, together with a copy of the sweeping certificate.
Shaun is registered, insured and very experienced. He provides all materials including dust sheets, to ensure your chimney is left serviceable without detriment to your soft furnishings.
STOP PRESS: our prices remain the same as last year!
If you want to book, please ring us, 01580 819117. If you don’t get an immediate reply, please leave a message and we will return your call at the earliest opportunity. Shaun can also be reached via Facebook message. We offer multi flue discounts and are happy to offer discounts to neighbours booking tandem appointments too.

As I sweep chimneys, many people ask me about wood, or more specifically the best wood to burn on their fires or in wood burners. I think this poem written almost a hundred years ago is still pretty accurate but whatever you burn, make sure that it is dry, not too large for your fireplace or wood burner and that you have the chimney swept at least once a year.

Comments & analysis: Beechwood fires are bright and clear / If the logs are kept a year,

A working Carbon Monoxide alarm saved the lives of the residents of this house. However please read the whole story. It would appear that the Wood burner was working absolutely correctly, the occupant decided to remove some of the hot ash and embers from the bottom of the wood burner, using a metal bucket for the purpose. For some reason (possibly the heat of the bucket), he decided not to remove the bucket straight outside but instead left it next to the log burner. The person concerned will not have noticed any smoke coming from the bucket but Carbon Monoxide was being produced and going straight into the room. The levels of Carbon Monoxide were high enough to kill the house occupants potentially within 3 hours but their Carbon Monoxide alarm was activated and they called the Fire Brigade out.
The bucket of hot ash and embers acted just like bringing a barbecue into your living room would. The Carbon Monoxide is clear, colourless and doesn't smell, you may notice a headache but with this much gas build up, you would probably lose consciousness before you noticed the headache.
Your open fire or log burner has a chimney to vent gases and smoke straight to the outside. If cleaning the grate, do it when the ash is cool enough to handle safely. Dispose of the ashes and cold embers straight to the outside.
Ensure you have a working Carbon Monoxide alarm and check it weekly. This one saved the lives of this family.
If you have any concerns about Carbon Monoxide build up, and your alarm is sounding, get out, get your family to safety and call the emergency services. Have your chimney swept regularly by a certified and insured chimney sweep. Make sure your carbon monoxide alarm works.
Any questions, please contact me, Shaun the Sweep 01580 819117. Clean chimneys and effective alarms save lives.

Why does Father Christmas come down the chimney into homes?
I've been looking into why Santa chose this route...
Apparently, he may have got the idea from the Norse God Odin, he traditionally entered homes at the Solstice (the Pagan New Year) through smoke holes or chimneys in buildings because they were always open.
Later, European stories, particularly the Italian Befana or 'Gift Giver' entered through the chimney into the homes on Epiphany Eve, the evening of 5th January to leave gifts for children.
In the 1800s, many Italian and other European immigrants went to America. The winters were very cold in some areas, much colder than the warmer Mediterranean winter climate. Traditions began to combine and where in some cultures, St Nicholas was welcomed via an open door or window, this was impractical in the colder areas and the tradition of the Old Woman or 'La Befana' coming down the chimney covered in soot to leave toys merged with St Nicholas bringing gifts of money and food to the door and then, Coca Cola put their own spin on it with the advertising campaign in the 1920s.
The image of our jolly Santa dressed in red coming down the chimney on Christmas Eve to leave gifts to delight the children is the common Uk traditional view. However the magic happens, we all enjoy this particular tradition, images are sent in the form of Christmas cards and Advent calendars and the popular advert 'Holidays are coming' that we all look forward to!
Unlike La Befana, our Santa isn't shown covered in soot, this maybe because we get our chimneys swept regularly! If you want your chimney made 'Santa ready' give me a call on 01580 819117.
