The hens are earning their keep!
The girls have taken their sweet time to get laying regularly, but freshly laid eggs are worth the wait πŸ₯š

Yes we mow in no mow May!

Come for a stroll round the apple trees and I'll show you how we do no mow May in this part of the garden..
We DO mow a path through and round the trees (mainly for hammock access 😁) and in other parts of the garden we DO mow the lawn and a path through the meadow
You don't have to leave your garden completely overgrown, just a corner of nettles, long grasses and wildflowers (yes weeds!!) will help out your local bug, bee, bird & butterfly population. πŸπŸ¦‹πŸž

Release the hens!
They have a big run, but nothing like getting into the garden, as you can see they get very excited! πŸ˜‚

In a world that can feel rushed and out of our control, a garden gives something back, a small patch of earth where you can nurture life, protect it, and watch it thrive.
A place for families to catch up, kids to play and learn, and to just sit quietly with a cuppa watching the birds

It feeds more than just the soil.
It feeds the soul. 🌿

Bealtaine is nearly upon us! πŸ”₯

My favourite time of year!

Bealtaine is a time deeply rooted in the land, the seasons, and old rural traditions. It was believed to be a transitional day when protection, luck, and growth for the months ahead were especially important.

Traditional ways to mark the day:

Decorate a May Tree
A lone bush or small tree (often a hawthorn) would be decorated with ribbons, flowers, and scraps of cloth. These β€œMay Bushes” were placed outside homes or in fields to invite good fortune and protect the land and livestock.

Light the Bealtaine fires
Bonfires were lit on hilltops and in communities across the country. People would pass between the fires, or bring embers home, believing the smoke and flame offered protection, purification, and blessing for the season ahead.

Wash your face in May Day dew
Collected in the early morning on May Day, May dew was thought to bring a clear complexion and good health for the year to come.

Even in small ways, these traditions offer a chance to connect with the rhythm of the season, just as generations before us did.

Have you heard the cuckoo yet?
We heard our local one return yesterday, so good to hear, and with the return of the swallows this week too, its a sure sign that summer is on the way!

April
It's been a wet & windy April here so far. But when the sun did manage to break through we were straight in the garden (including the hens who had a long awaited dust bath!) I've got my first orders of nettle tea out and I made a daisy cough syrup to help clear this never ending cough that's been doing the rounds πŸ™„
Hopefully the weather is on the turn 🀞
