❄️ WINTER TIP FROM RUNFRE ❄️

As temperatures drop, frozen outside taps and pipes are one of the most common causes of burst pipes and water damage during winter.

To protect your home:

✔️ Isolate the internal valve feeding your outside tap
✔️ Open the outside tap fully after isolating to drain remaining water
✔️ Leave it open over winter
✔️ Fit an insulated tap cover
✔️ Lag any exposed pipework
✔️ Know where your stopcock is in case of emergency

A frozen pipe can burst without warning – and often only becomes visible once it thaws.

If you’re unsure, or would like an isolation valve fitted or pipework checked, Runfre are here to help.

🌧️ Waterlogged Lawn? Here’s What We Found… 🌧️

We were recently called out to a property where the lawn was completely waterlogged — every time it rained, the water just sat on the surface with nowhere to go.

After inspection, the problem was clear:

🔹 No drainage system beneath the lawn
🔹 High-clay soil, meaning water couldn’t soak through
🔹 Result: A lawn that turned into a pond after heavy rain

To resolve it properly, the Runfre team installed a perforated land drain (French drain).
This allows the water to drop down and flow away through the drainage system instead of pooling on the surface.

Check the before & after photos — even during heavy rain, the water now clears instead of sitting on top of the lawn.

If your garden stays boggy, soft, or puddled… it’s likely a drainage issue. Runfre can fix it.

JCB Hydrogen Engine: A New Era for Infrastructure

JCB, a leading manufacturer of construction and agricultural equipment, has made significant strides in sustainable technology with the development of its hydrogen engine. This innovative engine represents a promising shift towards cleaner energy solutions in the construction industry and holds potential implications for our current infrastructure.

Key Features of the JCB Hydrogen Engine

1. **Zero Emissions**: The JCB hydrogen engine operates using hydrogen fuel, producing only water v***r as a byproduct. This characteristic significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change.

2. **Performance**: JCB's hydrogen engine is designed to deliver power and efficiency comparable to traditional diesel engines. The engine's performance ensures that it meets the demanding requirements of construction and heavy machinery applications.

3. **Infrastructure Compatibility**: The hydrogen engine can be integrated into existing machinery, allowing for a smoother transition from fossil fuels to hydrogen-powered equipment. This adaptability can help minimize disruption in operations while promoting sustainability.

4. **Renewable Energy Integration**: Hydrogen can be produced using renewable energy sources, such as wind or solar power, making it a truly sustainable fuel option. This integration can help reduce dependence on fossil fuels and enhance energy security.

Implications for Current Infrastructure

1. Reduction of Carbon Footprint. The adoption of hydrogen engines in construction and transportation can lead to a significant reduction in carbon emissions, helping cities and communities meet their climate goals.

2. Revamping Energy Systems. The shift towards hydrogen fuel requires an investment in infrastructure for hydrogen production, storage, and distribution. This could lead to the development of new facilities and pipelines, creating jobs and stimulating economic growth.

3. Enhancing Energy Diversity. Integrating hydrogen fuel into existing energy systems can diversify energy sources, making infrastructure more resilient to fluctuations in fossil fuel availability and prices.

4. Innovative Technology Adoption. The move towards hydrogen engines encourages the adoption of innovative technologies in various sectors, promoting research and development in clean energy solutions.

5. Regulatory and Policy Support. The success of hydrogen technology will likely depend on supportive policies and regulations that encourage investment in hydrogen infrastructure and incentivize the transition to cleaner energy sources.

The JCB hydrogen engine represents a significant advancement in the pursuit of sustainable energy solutions in heavy machinery and construction. Its adoption could have far-reaching implications for current infrastructure, paving the way for a cleaner, more resilient energy future. As governments, industries, and communities prioritize sustainability, innovations like the JCB hydrogen engine will play a crucial role in shaping a greener world.

$62 Billion dollar project

It's intriguing that 94% of China's population lives in the eastern part of the country, primarily due to the arid conditions in the west. To address this imbalance, the Chinese government is constructing the world's largest water transfer project, known as the South-to-North Water Diversion Project.

This ambitious initiative aims to redirect water from the Yangtze River in the south to the drier northern regions, including Beijing. The project is designed to support the growing population and agricultural needs in the east while alleviating water scarcity in the west. By investing in this massive infrastructure, China hopes to ensure sustainable water resources and promote balanced regional development.

China is building the World's Biggest Water Diversion Megaproject to change the natural flow of its rivers. The project involves creating artificial canals, ...

A Runfre Drainage and Pipelines Success Story in South Queensferry, Edinburgh**We recently tackled a challenging drainage issue for a client in South Queensferry, Edinburgh, who had just laid new turf, only to find their garden resembling a swamp. Unfortunately, the builder did not install any drainage, and the heavy clay soil exacerbated the problem. To make matters worse, the property was positioned downstream of several neighbouring homes, causing surface water runoff to flow directly into our client's garden. At Runfre Drainage and Pipelines, we pride ourselves on finding effective solutions to such problems. To address this issue, we implemented a comprehensive drainage system designed to capture the excess water and redirect it away from the turf. Our approach involved installing strategically placed drains that collect water and channel it around and beneath the grass, ensuring that the turf remains healthy and vibrant. Thanks to our team's expertise and dedication, we transformed a challenging situation into a flourishing garden. Our client can now enjoy their outdoor space without the worry of standing water and muddy conditions. If you’re facing similar drainage challenges, don’t hesitate to reach out to us. **French Drain Installation in Kirkliston**

Recently, we assisted a customer facing persistent flooding in their garden, primarily due to its position downstream from neighboring properties. The rainwater was accumulating on the clay soil and infiltrating their outdoor space.

To resolve this, we excavated a trench specifically designed to collect and redirect the water away from their property, ensuring a drier and more manageable garden area.

Is your Tap Water Safe to Drink?

If you are concerned about lead contamination in your water supply, you can contact Runfre at 0800 644 0131 or email [email protected] to arrange for water testing today. It's important to ensure the safety of your drinking water, and professional testing can provide you with the information you need.

In the UK, the maximum acceptable level of lead in drinking water is set at 10 micrograms per liter (ug/L), which is equivalent to 10 parts per billion (ppb). This standard is in line with the European Union Drinking Water Directive. If lead levels exceed this limit, the water is considered unsafe for consumption, and action must be taken to reduce lead concentrations in the water supply. If you suspect lead contamination in your water, it's advisable to have it tested and take appropriate measures to ensure safety.

Buildings at higher risk for lead contamination in water typically include:
1. **Older Buildings:** Properties built before
1986 are more likely to have lead pipes, fixtures, or solder. Homes constructed before this year often used lead in plumbing systems.
2. **Renovated Properties:** Buildings that have undergone renovations, especially those that involved plumbing work, may disturb lead pipes or lead-based materials.
3. **Rental Properties:** Older rental units may have outdated plumbing systems, which could pose a risk to tenants.
4. **Schools and Daycares:** Some older educational and childcare facilities may have lead plumbing, increasing the risk for children who are more vulnerable to lead exposure.
5. **Historic Buildings:** Many historic sites and buildings may still have original lead plumbing systems that have not been updated.
6. **Buildings with Lead Paint:** While lead paint primarily poses a risk through inhalation or ingestion, it can also leach into the water supply if plumbing fixtures are lead-based.

If you live in or manage one of these types of buildings, it's advisable to have the water tested for lead and take necessary actions to mitigate any risks.
