Despite some of the headlines you may have seen, wood-burning stoves are not banned in Scotland.

In fact, following a review of Scotland’s New Build Heat Standard, regulations were changed from 1 January 2025 to permit wood-burning stoves in new homes and buildings.

There are still rules around where and how a stove can be installed, which appliances can be used and what you can burn — particularly in Smoke Control Areas.

But that’s very different from a ban.

MYTH #2

“BIGGER STOVE = MORE HEAT = BETTER… RIGHT?”

It sounds logical.

Surely, the bigger the stove, the better it will heat your home?

Not necessarily.

One of the first questions we ask isn’t actually about kilowatts.

It’s:

“What do you want from your stove?”

For some people, their stove will be an important source of heat.

For others, the room is already well heated. They want a beautiful focal point, the atmosphere of a real fire and some additional radiant warmth on a cold evening.

Those are two very different requirements.

Room-size calculations are useful. But they’re only part of the picture.

The right stove needs to suit the room, the property, the existing heating and, importantly, how you actually intend to use it.

Because choosing the right stove isn’t about having the most kilowatts.

It’s about having the right stove for the job you want it to do.

I’M NOT VERY GOOD AT STANDING ON THE SIDELINES.

When you invite CleanBurn into your home, the person who comes out to survey your job doesn’t simply disappear once you’ve said yes.

I’m involved from the first conversation through to the installation itself.

IT’S JUST A METAL BOX… RIGHT?

Well, not quite.

It’s easy to look at a wood burning stove and think there’s not much to it. A metal box, some logs and a chimney.

But there’s actually quite a lot going on inside.

The way a stove controls airflow, how the firebox is designed, the position of the baffle, the glass and seals – they all affect how the stove burns.
