Firefighters worked hard to extinguish a fire that caused significant damage to a timber-framed home in Thaxted this evening.

Crews from Thaxted, Saffron Walden, Newport, and Braintree, along with an Aerial Ladder Platform from Chelmsford, were called at 5:20pm after homeowners discovered a fire inside their chimney. The fire, caused by a buildup of soot, quickly spread through the loft space and roof.

Thanks to the firefighters’ efforts, the fire was extinguished by 8:15pm, and the family is safe. However, the home has suffered significant fire damage to the roof and smoke, and water damage throughout

Station Manager Kev Jenner said: "Our crews worked incredibly hard to stop the fire from spreading further. This incident shows how important it is to regularly maintain and clean your chimney."

Fire crews were called to a house in Rochford this morning after heat from the log burner’s flue ignited the floor joists, which then spread to a wardrobe and other nearby materials.

Unfortunately, the bedroom was completely destroyed. However, the homeowner had recently attended a fire safety course and, thanks to her quick thinking in closing all the internal doors, the fire was contained, preventing further damage to the rest of the house.
