Spring is in the air and that means more people will be out enjoying the countryside. Its also a busy time for farmers with lambing season fast approaching.

If you are out walking your dog and there are livestock close by please remember to be responsible. Dogs can pose a serious threat to livestock, particularly young lambs and calves. If you find a field with young animals in it on your walk, please ensure you choose an alternative route.

• Keep dogs in sight, on a lead and under control around livestock.
• Where possible avoid livestock as they can be dangerous.
• Choose alternative routes rather than through fields of young calves or lambs.
• Leave gates as you find them.

It’s a criminal offence to allow your dog to attack or worry livestock on agricultural land. Failure to control your dog can result in a fine up to £40,000 or a 12-month prison sentence.
