If Martin Goodman from Friday Night Dinner ran a commercial window cleaning business…

He’d arrive at a business park, look up at a building and immediately say:

“Right… who’s in charge of this? Because I’ve got questions. Mainly: WHY is it vertical?”

He’d set up the equipment, immediately tangle himself in the hose and shout:

“THIS ISN’T A SYSTEM. THIS IS A TRAP DESIGNED BY SOMEONE WHO HATES ME PERSONALLY.”

A manager asks how long the job will take.

Martin: “Depends. Are we counting actual cleaning time… or the time I spend questioning my life choices?”

Meanwhile, a seagull flies past.

So I’m a Mr Bean… and I actually met another Mr Bean — in full character and in real life. That alone had the public doing double-takes and trying to work out if they’d accidentally walked into a sketch.

There we were, two “Beans” in the same space… one in character, one very much trying to act normal (and failing). It caused quite a bit of amusement from people passing by — lots of smiles, photos, and that confused “surely this can’t be real” reaction.

He was out raising money for a children’s charity supporting vulnerable young people and helping improve futures for families who need it most — genuinely a brilliant cause.

After my recent hospital stay a few weeks ago, it’s honestly made me think a bit differently about things. Life can change quickly, and you start appreciating the simple moments a lot more.

Because of that, DJB Commercial Window Cleaning Services were more than happy to make a donation to support the cause.

And in proper Mr Bean fashion… I was given a Mr Bean teddy as a thank you. He now sits in the van like a tiny supervisor, silently judging every decision and contributing absolutely nothing — but somehow still in charge.

A light-hearted moment that got a lot of attention and laughs from the public, but with a serious reminder underneath it all: kindness and support really do matter, even in the smallest forms.

A Personal Update

Firstly, I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has messaged, called and shown support over the last couple of weeks. The kindness shown to me has meant more than I can put into words.

On Tuesday 5th May, I suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed. Thankfully, the people around me that day acted incredibly quickly and carried out CPR and resuscitation until the emergency services arrived and took over. I will always be grateful to those who stepped in to help me in that moment.

I was then taken to York Hospital, where doctors discovered that blood flow had temporarily stopped reaching part of my bowel. When this happens, the bowel doesn’t receive the oxygen it needs, which can quickly become a very serious situation. Sadly, in my case it did become very serious and I was closely monitored every few hours with repeated blood tests while being placed on standby for emergency surgery if things worsened. Thankfully, with the care and treatment I received, the situation stabilised and surgery was not required.

While carrying out further scans, doctors also found some shadowing on my right kidney. This appears to be unrelated to what happened but will need further scans and tests over the coming weeks to understand exactly what it is.

After several weeks receiving fantastic care from the team at York Hospital, I was thankfully discharged a couple of days ago and will receive follow up appointments over the next few weeks.

This has been something I could never have imagined experiencing at 42 and it has certainly been a huge shock.

I’m incredibly grateful to the people who helped me on the day, the ambulance crew and paramedics who restarted my heart and got me safely to hospital, and the amazing staff at York Hospital who took such good care of me.

I’d also like to apologise to my neighbours for the commotion outside that day with two ambulances and a paramedic response car attending. We all love a drama sometimes!

Finally, thank you to my clients, many of whom I consider friends, for your patience, understanding and kind messages while I’ve been recovering.

Over the next few weeks I will be easing myself back into work slowly, so please bear with me while I get back up to full speed.
