With household energy costs back in the headlines following today’s energy price cap announcement, conversations around home heating remain as important as ever.

🥶 Cold homes can affect vulnerable people particularly hard during winter months, which is why reliable and affordable home heating remains so important.

🔥 We’ve published a new blog exploring the importance of warm homes, balanced conversations around home heating, and the role that heating resilience can play during periods of energy uncertainty .

Does your stove/flue smelly funny in the summer?

Stoves and flues smell in the summer mostly due to a reverse draught and condensates in the flue system. When it is warmer outside than inside your home, cold air sinks down the chimney instead of rising up, pushing accumulated soot, creosote, ash, and stale odours into your living room.
The smell usually becomes more noticeable during the warmer months.
1. Reverse Draught (The "Stack Effect")
A chimney relies on the air outside being colder than the air inside to create draught. In summer, the hot, humid external air creates a negative pressure, this reverses the draught. This causes the colder air inside the flue to sink, bringing stale odours directly into your room.
2. Humidity and Moisture
Summer air carries higher humidity. When this moist air enters the flue, it combines with dormant soot and creosote (a tar-like wood byproduct), activating them. This chemical reaction produces a strong, pungent, or oily smell.

You can call/contact us to clear the soot and advise you on best practices to reduce/clear this issue.
