The Scandinavian way of lighting your stove is very effective. Logs on the bottom, then kindling, then fire lighters on top. The flue gets hot very quickly and once the kindling and logs produce any smoke it is all drawn away very fast up the flue. No smoke into the room. You can watch a demonstration on YouTube.

Much safer than roof ladders, no breaking of tiles and leaves both hands free to work, not to hold on for dear life!
