With the All-Energy Exhibition and Conference fast approaching, we’re looking forward to being back in Glasgow for one of the UK’s key renewable energy events.

Once again, Gilkes will be sharing a stand with the British Hydropower Association and Gilkes Energy Ltd, showcasing the role hydropower plays in delivering dependable, long-term renewable generation.

Our Hydro team will be on hand during the event to discuss how we help asset owners protect and strengthen the value of their investments through our specialist services:

🔒 Protecting your investment through proactive, planned maintenance
⚙️ Maximising long-term equipment performance and lifespan
📈 Increasing reliability to minimise downtime and unplanned outages
💡 Improving energy output and overall revenue generation

We deliver this through a range of tailored services, including preventative maintenance, condition-based risk assessments, HydroView remote monitoring, and asset optimisation & modernisation.

If you're focused on getting more from your hydropower scheme — both technically and commercially — come and speak to us.

Last week, a group of our engineers took part in a technical training day with Savery Hydraulics, focusing on the core fundamentals of Hydraulic Control Module (HCM) operation. The session covered the main components of an HCM, essential maintenance practices, safe accumulator handling, and the functions of the different valve types used within these systems. We also looked in depth at how directional proportional valves support high‑accuracy control for applications such as deflectors.

In the afternoon, the team visited the Scandale Beck hydroelectric site for hands‑on operational training. This included safely isolating the hydraulic system, checking accumulator levels, and operating equipment in both manual and automatic modes—giving our engineers valuable insight into system behaviour and troubleshooting.

Savery Hydraulics are one of our strategic OEM partners, and this training ensures our team stays fully up to date with their technology so we can continue delivering high‑quality support to both existing and new customers.

It was an extremely valuable day, combining classroom learning with live site experience and reinforcing the importance of correct maintenance and system monitoring.

Our Gilkes Service team has been on-site at the Wyvis Estate in the Scottish Highlands, carrying out a scheduled monthly service on the 2MW hydropower scheme powered by two of our 1MW twin‑jet Pelton turbines.

As part of the customer’s maintenance plan, our engineers completed routine checks including voltage verification, signal testing, and vibration readings on the turbine bearings to ensure smooth and reliable operation.

These routine tasks play a crucial role in ensuring long-term reliability and performance. Gilkes provides tailored service packages to keep your hydropower system running at its best, minimising downtime and preventing costly repairs.

Get in touch with our team to discuss a maintenance plan that fits your site.

As part of National Apprenticeship Week, we’re continuing to celebrate the talented apprentices who are building their careers with us. Today, we’re pleased to spotlight our second apprentice of the week.

Our second apprentice of the week is Hayden Allen, a second year apprentice, currently working in our production engineering department. Hayden recently represented Gilkes at the Kendal College Apprenticeship open evening where he shared his experience at Gilkes with students, as he explains here:

"I have been a Level 4 Engineering Apprentice at Gilkes now since September 2024. The apprenticeship so far has been great, it involves studying at Kendal College one day a week as well as working the other four. My favourite aspect of the Gilkes apprenticeship is the rotation plan, which involves going through each department of the business gaining knowledge and experience throughout. This helps me gain knowledge of a variety of areas and opens multiple opportunities for my future."

We’re proud to see our apprentices developing their skills, representing Gilkes in the community, and building strong foundations for the future.

🙌 To celebrate Apprenticeship Week, we are highlighting the experiences of our apprentices and the important role they play in developing the future of our business.

Today we hear from Tom Appleby, a 4th year apprentice who's current role is maintenance electrical apprentice. 🔌

"During my time at Gilkes I have been lucky enough to learn and develop a wide range of skills. Being an apprentice at Gilkes gives me the perfect balance between learning at college and applying what I have studied in a real working environment. Alongside what I’ve learnt at college, I have also gained valuable hands-on experience in the workplace which has really developed my practical skills. Gilkes provides a supportive environment and offers a great apprenticeship scheme which is why I believe it is a good company to work for."

Tom was recently awarded apprentice of the month at Kendal College. We’re proud of all our apprentices achievements and continue to support the next generation of skilled professionals. 🎉 🎖️

Congratulations to Tom from everyone at the Gilkes! Well-deserved achievement and great to see hard work paying off. 👏🎉

⭐️Apprentice of the month ⭐️

Congratulations to Tom, who is our first Apprentice of the Month for 2026.

Tom is a L3 Electrical Installation & Maintenance apprentice who works for Gilbert Gilkes and Gordon Ltd.

His facilitator (Alistair) said:

“I have worked with Tom since April and he has consistently demonstrated outstanding commitment and motivation as an apprentice. He completed all Off-The-Job hours and his portfolio four months ahead of schedule, remaining ahead of target at every review. With excellent support from his mentor Alan, Tom has shown real drive, high standards, and has a bright future ahead of him.”

His employer (Gilkes) said:

“I have known Tom since May 2024, which was the time I started with Gilkes and Gordon. Tom’s knowledge at that time was quite limited as his duties at that time in the factory were non – electrical. Tom has a strong desire to learn which has helped him to progress, he will be successful in achieving the relevant qualifications and skills for his future development.”

Well done Tom! Keep up the hard work 🥳🎉
