Sustainable swap number 3 ā»ļø
Recycle.
It seems like we all do it now, because in most places local authorities expect their residents to do it. They even provide facilities!
However, I so often see that people have no clue what to recycle and how.
Here are some simple rules you should follow to recycle correctly:
āļø rinse your empties. If you put that empty jar that still has mayonnaise in it...well, it's contaminated and will not be recycled. Same applies to plastics. Give it a rinse, otherwise the whole lot ends up in landfill.
āļø read the label to find if it is currently recyclable. Most manufacturers will tell you if it is or not.
āļø not every silver material is aluminium. Simple test- if you squash it and it bounces back (like crisps or cookie wrapper) it's not recyclable as aluminium. It is not even recyclable as plastic!
āļø know the symbols of the plastics. Every type of plastic has its code. To make it less confusing remember that numbers 1, 2, 5(lids, bottles, fruit trays) are ok to be put out for collections once rinsed, and number 4 (plastic envelopes, carrier bags, bread foil) are to be recycled by bigger supermarkets.
āļø some councils collect textiles for recycling. Please use that opportunity instead of donating to a charity shop. They won't be able to sell damaged or soiled clothes, yet have to go through it to send it for recycling anyway. Save yours and their's time.
I hope you find it helpful :)
Till the next one!
