Here's one of Dobroyd castle cottages in Todmorden that we restored to its former glory using a mixture of hotlime pointing mortar using the same methods as when it was built in 1866.
The property had been suffering from moisture pe*******on for the past 80 years or so as it had been re-pointed with a red mastic just after ww2 when the home office took over to teach young males manual skills. Furthermore over pointed with a cement pointing mortar in more recent years.
The benefits of restoring this cottage are -
1- The external walls are now waterproof as the kiln dried lime absorbs the moisture and emits it back into the external atmosphere.
2 - The external stonework will not deteriorate or perish any further.
3 - The fabric of the building will dry out and be classed as warm walls opposed to wet cold walls, which will in time save money on energy bills, as cold walls that retain moisture absorb heat from inside the property in an attempt to dry out and force the moisture back.
This theory is the same with more traditional properties if the external walls are porous.
