Today's job highlighted exactly why experience and proper safety checks matter.

I attended a property where a bird had unfortunately fallen down the chimney along with nesting material. After a full inspection, I confirmed there were no eggs and no chicks present, and the bird had abandoned the chimney.

Under UK wildlife law, only active nests are protected, so in this case it was completely legal and responsible to remove the remains of the nest. Leaving it in place would have risked blockages, poor ventilation, and potential carbon monoxide hazards, so removal was the safest option.

During the inspection, I also discovered a serious issue — the liner had been fitted upside down by the builders, and even more concerning, the support components had been removed.
This could have led to significant safety risks if left unchecked.

This is exactly why, as a fully qualified and experienced solid fuel heating engineer, I don’t treat safety inspections as an optional extra.
