Spring is a wonderful time of year in the UK, with longer days, warmer weather, and beautiful blooming flowers. However, it is also a time when pests become more active, causing damage to plants, trees, and homes. In this article, we will discuss the most common pests in spring in the UK and how to control them.

Ants:
Ants are a common sight in spring, as they emerge from their nests in search of food. They can be particularly problematic in the kitchen, where they are attracted to sweet and sugary foods. To control ants, it is important to keep surfaces clean and dry, store food in sealed containers, and seal any cracks or gaps where they may enter your home.

Wasps:
Wasps are another common pest in spring, as they emerge from hibernation and start building their nests. They are attracted to sweet foods and can be particularly aggressive if they feel threatened. To control wasps, it is important to remove any sources of food and water, seal any gaps or holes in walls, and keep outdoor bins closed.

Moths:
Moths can be a problem in spring, especially if you have wool or silk clothing or carpets in your home. They are attracted to natural fibres and can cause damage to them if left unchecked. To control moths, it is important to keep your home clean and free of dust, vacuum carpets and rugs regularly, and store clothing and fabrics in sealed containers.

Flies:
Flies are a common pest in spring, as they are attracted to warm and humid environments. They can be particularly problematic in the kitchen, where they can contaminate food and spread disease. To control flies, it is important to keep surfaces clean and dry, cover food, and dispose of rubbish regularly.

Aphids:
Aphids are a common pest in spring, as they emerge from hibernation and start feeding on plants. They can cause damage to leaves and flowers, and attract other pests such as ants. To control aphids, it is important to inspect plants regularly, remove any infected leaves or flowers, and use insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary.

In conclusion, pests in spring in the UK can be a nuisance and cause damage to plants, trees, and homes. However, with proper prevention and control measures, it is possible to keep these pests at bay. By keeping your home and garden clean and free of sources of food and water, sealing any cracks or gaps where pests may enter, and using appropriate pest control methods, you can enjoy a pest-free spring season.

It is far too early for wasps as yet in our area, we do not see live wasps’ nests until June at the very earliest, however this current spell of hot weather has brought on the solitary bee season and they are to be seen investigating little holes in masonry and window frames. They do bear a similarity to wasps but please be assured that you cannot possibly be seeing wasps this early in the year.

As of today’s date the earliest insect pests we expect to appear will be the ants (Lasius niger) which can start to appear in homes any time from March onwards. We now have much better methods of dealing with ants than the old-fashioned sprays and powders and the best time to carry out a treatment is March, April and May as soon as the ants start to appear in your home. By carrying out treatment for ants early in the spring we can completely prevent the troublesome ‘flying ant’ phase which tends to appear in mid-summer every year. Due to the increased efficiency and reliability of the new treatments we are able to offer a one year or three year guarantee. Please read our ants page https://www.harrierpestprevention.com/ants-cured-3yr-guarantee/ for further details of our treatment. We have a special offer for treatments carried out before 31st May 2018. Prices relate to a normal size (3 bedroom) property, for larger properties please ring for a quote. Our Prices : Ant treatment with a 1 year guarantee £95.00. Ant treatment with a 3 year guarantee £145. Treatment is for ants INSIDE properties only.
