🥶 IS YOUR LOFT LETTING YOUR HEAT ESCAPE THIS WINTER? 🏠

As temperatures drop, it’s time to put the heating on and keep your home warm. But before turning up the thermostat, check that your loft insulation is doing its job!

🔥 Around 25% of heat can be lost through an uninsulated or poorly insulated roof. Upgrading your loft insulation could help keep your home warmer and reduce wasted energy.

🧤 Loft insulation removal, replacement and upgrades

If your existing insulation is old, dirty, contaminated or damaged, we can remove it and help you get your loft back into a clean, usable condition.

If your insulation is clean but you can clearly see the ceiling joists, it may only be around 100mm thick. Current UK guidance generally recommends 270mm of loft insulation for a typical cold loft, so yours could benefit from an upgrade.

🐀 Rodent-contaminated lofts? We can help.

Have you had rats or mice in your loft? If droppings, urine or contamination have left you reluctant to store belongings up there, we can help restore the space.

🧹 Our loft clearance and cleaning services include:

✅ Removal of old, dirty or contaminated insulation
✅ Loft clearances, including unwanted clutter and rubbish
✅ Belongings brought down for you to sort through
✅ Cleaning following rodent infestations
✅ Appropriate biocide treatments for contaminated areas
✅ New loft insulation and upgrades
✅ Loft boarding to create useful storage space
✅ Removal of unused water tanks
✅ Preventative and curative woodworm treatments

Woodworm survey and mouse proofing today

-1930s Semi detached property
-Loft inspection found water ingress from chimney stack, so potential lead flashing needs repairing. This causes the loft to be damp.
-Membrane type - Bitumen felt - Non permeable. No way of damp air venting out.
-Moisture content in beams - 13-19% at risk due to ingress of rain water from chimney stack leak.
-Woodworm active - CFB - early/mild infestation
-No ventilation so moisture absorbing into beams making it easy for woodworm to chew through beams easier. They are interested in the starch/sugars of the sapwood.
- Vole and Mouse droppings found in loft - noises heard at night.
- Air vents meshed BEEKIND Style - no covers fitted

Recommendations
- Stop water ingress (Penetrating damp)
- Install ventilation to loft - membrane vents x 10
- Reduce moisture in beams to below 12%
- Carry out woodworm treatment - Curative
- Add 200mm insulation to 100mm layer to improve thermal efficiency
- 2 stage trapping program carried out

All carried out today in Badminton & Chippenham

If you need a woodworm survey carried out, we look for more than the type of wood boring insect. We check for active/redundant holes, moisture content in beams, water ingress if any, ventilation if any, condition of loft insulation and check for rodents/bats/wasps in lofts.

Its curtains for Deadline in my short lived experience. Tried it once, shoved a ton of it into a nest, went on holiday then customer came back from their holiday and said its still active. Didnt ruin my holiday but made me not want to use Pye dust again!
Not only did l use loads, l even waited to see if it worked, which after 1hr it was showing something but they were the angriest wasps ive ever come across, attacking my van, bins and making the area unsafe to walk about in. The active ingredient is Pyrethrins which can be found on Ant powders found in B&Q and local hardware shops or online. Those who say use ant powders or wasp powders are using the exact same product/chemical. I recommend you dont!

Vulcan or Quartz or Perbio Choc are the go to, or Lodi Digrain.
The next choice is getting henry hoover out 😆😆

Has anyone had any luck using Pye dust? If so when and where? What time of the year? Was the nest hidden or exposed?

Anyone (pest controller) want a free tub of Pye dust, pop round mine and grab it, its not going in my van again.

A very healthy and active wild honeybee colony under stone tiles in a grade 2 listed building. The customer knew they had been there since 2021 but they had been there much longer as some of the comb was black which means its had frost damage and, had millions of bees walk over the comb.
Around 80kg of comb was removed but around 30kg was only saved that is edible with the rest made of ivy honey or rapseed honey, which isnt nice to consume.

The queen was found by Steve our resident beekeeper who has an apairy near Bristol Airport. The honey has now been named Flight Path Apairy and will be ready to purchase soon! Once the page and QR code for payment has been created, we will announce the launch and you can order untouched, pure, fresh wild honeycomb. Limited stocks will be available from bee extractions so once its gone, its gone!

Have a great weekend and hope you enjoyed watching our last honeybee removal of 2026!

Our next September Installer of the Month entry comes from Beekind Pest Control Pest Control, with a thorough solar panel proofing job using Defender Jaws®. Just watch the fab video!

Every three months. That is how often this homeowner was paying to have their gutters cleaned because of the pigeons living beneath their 14 solar panels.

Along with the cost came the constant noise, day and night, which had reached the point where it was making life at home miserable.

This video shows exactly what can accumulate when pigeons are allowed to live beneath a solar array. After checking carefully to make sure there were no nests, the team fitted Defender Jaws® around the panels using the 35 mm side of the reversible strips.

Jaws® locks securely onto the panel frames without drilling, adhesive or damage to the panels, creating a simple but effective barrier that prevents pigeons from getting back underneath.

The installation was only part of the job. Working safely from scaffolding allowed the team to remove the gutters completely, empty out an entire bag of guano and clean beneath the roof tiles. A biocide treatment was applied before the fouling was removed, helping to reduce the risks from harmful particles becoming airborne during cleaning.

The result is a thoroughly cleaned roof, clear gutters and a solar array that pigeons can no longer call home.

Excellent work from Beekind Pest Control. Thank you for choosing Defender Jaws® and for showing just how much difference a thorough solar panel proofing job can make.

If pigeons are living beneath your solar panels, get in touch with Beekind Pest Control for a comprehensive solution.

⚠️ Important safety reminder when removing wasp nests

I recently had an encounter in a loft with a newly hatched, mated queen wasp that was looking for somewhere to overwinter. Unfortunately, I disturbed her while carrying out a woodworm treatment. She became quite a nuisance while I was working in the loft, so she had to be dealt with.

I then had another woodworm treatment to carry out in a different loft, but there was a large, active wasp nest in the way. I treated the nest with Digrain and Vulcan and returned 10 days later to carry out the woodworm treatment. The customer also requested that I remove the old nest while I was there.

During the removal, large numbers of queen wasps suddenly came flying out of the nest — something I certainly wasn’t expecting.

Although the original queen and workers had been killed, the developing queens had been protected inside their cells beneath the white capping. They must have hatched during the 10 days between my visits.

This really highlights that we can no longer assume that a treated or apparently redundant nest is completely inactive when we come to remove it. There can still be developing queens inside the nest, which may hatch between treatments and removal.

This isn’t the first time I’ve experienced this, although the last occasion was a few years ago and I hadn’t treated the nest beforehand. On that occasion, I ended up with hundreds of queen wasps in my van and driver’s compartment, flying around the windscreen while I was driving!

So, please take extra care when removing old or treated wasp nests, particularly in lofts and other enclosed spaces. A nest that looks dead doesn’t necessarily mean everything inside it is dead.

It’s a good reminder that we need to be especially cautious when disturbing these nests, even when we believe the colony has been dealt with.

Anyway, stay safe out there my fellow pesties, always be prepared for unexpected!

❤️❤️
