When you’ve been trading for over 45 years you pick up a few stories. Here’s another one from the vault…
Once upon a time in Chester, somewhere in the late 90s (could be early noughties) there was a window cleaner.
Let’s call him… Jim Jam John (not his real name, but also not not his real name).
Now Jim didn’t exactly have what you’d call a “thriving round.” What he did have, however was a strong commitment to topping up his “beer tokens”… often via regular visits to the local bookies.
Work was… inconsistent but ideas on the other hand were flowing.
One evening, after what we can only assume was a particularly creative planning session, Jim had a stroke of genius.🍺
Armed with nothing but a jar of jam and what can only be described as entrepreneurial spirit, he took to our streets of Chester and began to lightly apply said jam to a number of shop windows under the cover of darkness.
The next morning it would be Knock knock. “Morning, noticed you’ve got a bit of a sticky situation there… want that sorting?”
And just like that, business was jammin’.🍓
Now we’re not saying this is the kind of initiative that would’ve impressed Alan Sugar, but you have to admire the commitment to self-generated leads.
For a while, it worked.
Until as these things often do, Jim got a little too confident, a little too generous with the preserves and was eventually caught mid-spread.👀
Turns out that shop owners are less impressed when the mess is internally sourced.
It’s safe to say his marketing strategy didn’t quite stand the test of time. 😂
At Abbey Window Cleaning we prefer our leads a little less fruity.
When you pick the A team there’s no midnight condiments. No forced demand creation. Just honest work and clean windows.
We do still appreciate a good bit of jam though. On toast. Where it belongs.🍓✨
