When you’ve been trading for over 45 years you pick up a few stories. Here’s another one from the vault…

Once upon a time in Chester, somewhere in the late 90s (could be early noughties) there was a window cleaner.
Let’s call him… Jim Jam John (not his real name, but also not not his real name).
Now Jim didn’t exactly have what you’d call a “thriving round.” What he did have, however was a strong commitment to topping up his “beer tokens”… often via regular visits to the local bookies.

Work was… inconsistent but ideas on the other hand were flowing.
One evening, after what we can only assume was a particularly creative planning session, Jim had a stroke of genius.🍺
Armed with nothing but a jar of jam and what can only be described as entrepreneurial spirit, he took to our streets of Chester and began to lightly apply said jam to a number of shop windows under the cover of darkness.
The next morning it would be Knock knock. “Morning, noticed you’ve got a bit of a sticky situation there… want that sorting?”
And just like that, business was jammin’.🍓

Now we’re not saying this is the kind of initiative that would’ve impressed Alan Sugar, but you have to admire the commitment to self-generated leads.
For a while, it worked.
Until as these things often do, Jim got a little too confident, a little too generous with the preserves and was eventually caught mid-spread.👀

Turns out that shop owners are less impressed when the mess is internally sourced.
It’s safe to say his marketing strategy didn’t quite stand the test of time. 😂

At Abbey Window Cleaning we prefer our leads a little less fruity.
When you pick the A team there’s no midnight condiments. No forced demand creation. Just honest work and clean windows.

We do still appreciate a good bit of jam though. On toast. Where it belongs.🍓✨

Last night we swapped poles for axes and went to Axt Haus for a bit of a team night out to try axe throwing and some German beers 🪓🪓🍻 🪓🪓
It didn’t take long to get the hang of it and once we did, there were some serious shots flying!

A few of us even got some “kill shots” meaning the bell of pride got rung a few times 🥲🎯🔔

Such a fun way to let off some steam after a busy start to spring. Massive shout out to our instructor Sam who made things really fun and made sure nobody got an axe to the back of the head 💀🩸

Afterwards we went next door to The Stixx for some incredible South African food. Highly recommend this place too, Top quality food, brilliant staff and the perfect way to round off the night! 🥩🇿🇦🍗

Great team, great laughs and a proper good night all round! ✨

Every now and then ya boys are let loose on a sign.

If we’re to be polite.. we’d say this one had clearly seen a few too many British winters. If we’re not.. we’d say this one is somewhere between freshly installed and an archaeological find. It had picked up a bit of character over the years so the A team were called in to do our thing!

We never promise it’ll come out looking brand new, we’re window cleaners not miracle workers… but we can promise it’ll look like it’s had a decent night’s sleep and a double espresso. 👊🏼

Of course you get the windows, doors, frames and sills cleaned when we show up (everyone does)… but when it comes to commercial jobs, our attitude is “if it’s part of the building, it’s fair game”.

If your premises is looking worse for wear, we’ll bring it back up to scratch. A proper clean makes all the difference ✨

🚐✨ New recruit spotted! Clocked off for the day and already posing like she’s done a full shift… 😅🐶

This is Winnie, Nathan’s very hardworking assistant (or supervisor… depending on who you ask). Word on the street is that she’s keen to start coming out in the van but we’re not sure about her work ethic yet.

She’s already mastered:
✔️ Sitting on the job
✔️ Looking adorable
✔️ Distracting the team

We’re still working on:
❌ Window cleaning
❌ Early starts
❌ Not chasing the hoses 😂

Should Winnie be allowed out in the van with Nathan? Who’d be up for her visiting your home or business when we’re making your windows sparkle?

Here we have one from the vault where Google maps caught Nic, at a time where he clearly thought he was the main character.

Look at him! Over the head earphones, fully locked in to absolutely nothing with his little silver van complete with Microsoft paint logo slapped all over it like it’s a branding breakthrough.
You just know he stood back after that was done thinking, “Yeah… that’s the one. Smashed it”

That stare back at the Google car too..
like he’s about to do something about it.
Go on then, Nic what’s the move?
Spray them with your pole? 😂

Our boy is posturing like he runs the streets…
it’s a cul-de-sac in Chester mate. Relax.

You can actually see it in his face. That’s not confidence… just complete unawareness.
No clue what’s coming.
No clue what he’s doing.
Just vibes, headphones and a hose that’s about to absolutely ruin his afternoon.

We will say this though…
The calves.
Putting in a shift.
Carrying the entire operation, putting in a heroic shift holding up a belly that was clearly making plans to get bigger.
And somehow (and this is the worst part) he still looks better there than he does today.
Life’s done him. Properly. 🔥🥲

Nic has signed up to take on a shark dive challenge at Blue Planet Aquarium this Father’s Day weekend!🦈

As a small local business, we’re always grateful for the support we get from our loyal customers and community, so it would mean a lot if you could get behind this one too 😊

If you’re able to donate via the link below, even a small amount makes a real difference to our local children’s charity SPACE. They provide accessible support and play to children (and their families) with additional needs such as autism and ADHD.

If donating isn’t possible, a quick share goes a long way to helping us get to our target and will definitely motivate Nic to get in the water in June!

We’re not sure what will be scarier.. the sharks or him trying to squeeze into a wetsuit 😂

Help Nic Milner raise money to support SPACE

Right, so March marks 45 years since Abbey Window Cleaning took the cleaning world by storm! These were the days when a ladder was considered cutting edge and a squeegee was high-tech.

We planned a proper cake smash this year with the whole team (balloons, bow ties, the works!) but logistics got the better of us so we thought we’d do it in cartoon form!

Massive thanks to the whole team past and present and to every customer who’s been with us on this ride.

Here’s to 45 more 💙🎉🎂🩵

Somehow (and we’re still not entirely sure how) Abbey Window Cleaning and Nic’s Gutters have ended up on the front cover of Window Talk magazine, the official publication of the Federation of Window Cleaners 🤩

What started as a local family window cleaning business has grown into Abbey Window Cleaning and the launch of Nic’s Gutters… including specialist work at Chester Zoo (including a bat cave🦇).

It’s a huge honour to have our work recognised by the Federation of Window Cleaners. This is an organisation that does a massive amount for safety, training and raising standards across our industry. Being featured by them is a proper milestone for our business and you know Nic is already at Homesense looking for the biggest frame they sell for the office wall! There’s even talk of this getting printed on all the vans 😳

Big thank you to the FWC for the feature and an even bigger thank you to all our customers who continue to support us and trust us with their homes and businesses.

Surely this is proof that if you stick at something long enough… even a window cleaner can end up in a magazine 😂
