The time has come… I’m officially retiring!

My working life began in 1974 at the age of 16, when I was fortunate enough to join James McConchie, a local family-run electrical, plumbing & heating business. I began my apprenticeship there, learning from a great bunch of guys—Alan Crearie, Jimmy Greggan, Frank Rooney, Neil McConchie, and later apprentice Ross McConchie. And of course, the boss, Jimmy McConchie—probably the cleverest man I ever met. I enjoyed my time in the trade, which set me up for the journey ahead.

In 1985, with my love of fault finding, I joined Hoover as a Field Service Engineer covering Dumfries & Galloway. It was challenging to begin with, but I soon settled in.

In 1999, Dyson created their Field Service and After Sales Division, and I was recruited as one of the first Field Service Engineers. I enjoyed working on quality products and travelling to where cover was needed—it felt like I had the best job in Dumfries & Galloway.

In 2020, Dyson closed their Field Service Division and no longer required field service engineers. This gave me the opportunity to start my own business and continue repairing all makes of vacuums, not just Dyson.

After 6 fulfilling years, I’ve decided it’s time to pack up my tools and enjoy retirement.

Interesting Repair came into workshop last week, 55 year old Kenwood Chef mixer. Was it worth repairing ? Off course it was these machines were built to serviced and repaired. Parts still available. Replaced a gear and grease. Now working as good as new. Charlie McKerlie, I’m sure you seen a few off them in your day ??

What a night of mixed emotions! 🥂

Duncan has secured a remarkable win, proudly bringing home the Tourism & Visitor Management Award from the Helping It Happen Awards, organised by Scottish Land & Estates. What an outstanding achievement!

Our Gather team faced strong competition at the VisitScotland/South of Scotland Destination Alliance Thistle Awards and narrowly missed the title. We hope our team enjoyed their night nonetheless, felt the pride of being nominated, and know that their hard work is truly appreciated year round!

Happy New Year to all. Thanks for all the likes to my page. Just a reminder that I am still open and able to fix your Dyson (and all other brands) as it is deemed as an essential repair. Get in touch and I will collect your vacuum, repair it and return it with minimum contact required. Please do give me a call if your repair is urgent otherwise I will respond to any messages ASAP.

Hi everyone. Most of you will know me as the ‘Dyson man’ and originally the ‘Hoover man’. I’ve been servicing and repairing vacuum cleaners for 35 years and I’m now self employed covering Dumfries and Galloway. If your vacuum is giving you bother then give me a shout.
