Volkswagen Amarok
The worst car to prep I think we’ve ever had in
Decorators car from new, it was covered head to toe in overspray, paint blobs, more overspray and horrendous swirling. The dealership tried to do something on the front but they did more damage than good.
As per tradition, a car this bad from a second hand dealer is typically sprayed in a copious amount of silicone spray and this was no exception. Once it had worn off the actual condition of the paint showed through.
The owner works with me on recovery, I couldn’t believe the condition. He won a claim towards the repair, cause that’s what it was going to have to be, so after some failed attempts with getting it booked in it finally happened.
Aggressive wash, aggressive decontamination process. Claybar was coming off red, purple, white, chunky.
It was a working vehicle and served a purpose. It isn’t the owners fault and not necessarily the dealership however covering up paintwork this bad is not a good idea as it will come back to bite you. Had they disclosed it it could have been dealt with sooner. Not much honesty about these days.
After the decontamination process was complete, we discussed how far the corrections were going to go. We are incredibly OCD here, we have to come back down to earth sometimes and understand not all finishes need to be perfect. This truck has and will be used off road in rough conditions, but it also deserves to not look out of place outside a fancy restaurant if the occasion happens.
A steady two pass single stage was conducted around the entire car, with the bonnet receiving a rotary hard cut before a refine.
Chrome was polished correctly, thoroughly, the chrome sill guards were wire wool’d (0000 fine grade) to remove the overspray and staining off of them successfully,
All in all about 2 solid days work to get this Amarok looking like it should. Only this time it’s an honest finish.
It was a great one personally as the owner has helped on numerous occasions on shift so it was nice to be able to show him what I am good at and return the favour of all those times he’s showed up for me.
