Thought we’d conduct an autopsy of our failed bumblebee nest tonight.
It seems to have been infested by the wax moth Larvae, which explains a lot.
Wax worms are the caterpillar stage of the Wax Moth, which act as destructive natural lodgers or parasites inside bumblebee nests. Female moths lay eggs in the nests, and the resulting larvae eat wax, pollen, honey, debris, and even live bumblebee larvae, eventually destroying the entire nest. 😩😩😩🫣

This absolutely wonderful Queen has not been seen for a few weeks and all activities in and around the nest have ceased.
I know they disappear way before the wasps do but this seems very early.
I think the heat has certainly contributed to the nests demise.

So a few months ago we rehoused some tree bumblebees in our garden.
Well the queen is getting a bit hot in this weather and decided to provide air conditioning at the entrance.

Today’s conundrum…..an elderly customer has 20-30 insects every morning in her bedroom window cill.
This is causing her undue stress and anxiety which she can do without.
On inspection we had an idea what they were…..biscuit beetles!
Also, they were located in one room, so we knew the source was somewhere nearby.

The biscuit beetle, also known as the bread beetle, drugstore beetle, and misnamed as the biscuit weevil, is a small brown beetle that infests a wide variety of dried plant products, where it is among the most common non-weevils.
So today’s source was a microwaveable wheat bag, that you warm and place on an area of your body. This was stored in the wardrobe, see the pictures below.

Easy to treat by throwing it out and hoovering up any in the room, no chemicals required.
If you zoom into the pictures you will see the holes in the wheat and lots of beetles.

Quick update on the rehoused tree bumblebees.
Must be happy as the males are performing the drone dance outside the nest to entice out the virgin queens.
Then it rained and spoilt the party 😂🤪

Had an elderly customer who REALLY didn’t want these tree bees ( bumble bees to me and you) in her bird box.
So I removed them and put them in my garden instead 👍🏻🤪
