1️⃣ I arrive on time and lay down dust sheets to protect your floors and furniture
2️⃣ A quick look at the fireplace/stove and the chimney setup
3️⃣ I sweep the flue using professional power sweeping equipment — it's thorough and much more effective than the old brush method
4️⃣ Everything gets vacuumed up with an industrial HEPA-filtered vac — no soot, no mess
5️⃣ A smoke draw test to make sure the chimney is pulling properly
6️⃣ I'll talk you through what I found and any recommendations

🔥 Open fire or wood burner — is the maintenance really different?

Short answer: yes, a bit!

🪵 Wood burners / stoves:
✅ Sweep at least once a year (twice for heavy use)
✅ Check the rope seal around the door — if it's flat or loose, replace it
✅ Inspect the fire bricks/liners inside — cracks are normal but deep damage needs attention
✅ Check the baffle plate isn't warped or sagging
✅ Keep the glass clean — burn hotter to reduce soot buildup

🔥 Open fires:
✅ Sweep at least once a year
✅ Check the fireback for cracks
✅ Make sure the damper moves freely (if you have one)
✅ Keep the hearth clear and check the register plate is intact

Both need annual sweeping — that's non-negotiable. The rest I can check and advise on during a standard visit.

⚠️ Not sure if your chimney needs sweeping? Here are 6 signs it's overdue:

1️⃣ Smoke coming back into the room when you light a fire
2️⃣ A strong, unpleasant smell from the fireplace (especially in warm weather)
3️⃣ Black soot falling into the hearth
4️⃣ Your fire is harder to light or burns poorly
5️⃣ You can't remember when it was last done (honestly — this is the most common one!)
6️⃣ Visible soot or tar staining on the chimney breast wall

Even if none of these apply, the advice is the same: at least once a year, every year. It's quick, it's affordable, and it keeps your home safe.

🪵 Summer is the perfect time to start stacking firewood for next winter. But how you store it matters more than you'd think!

Here's how to do it right:
✅ Keep it off the ground — use a pallet or raised base
✅ Stack loosely so air can circulate between logs
✅ Cover the top but NOT the sides (airflow is key)
✅ Store away from the house wall to avoid damp issues
✅ Aim for at least 12 months of seasoning for hardwood

Burning wet or unseasoned wood is one of the biggest causes of chimney problems — it creates far more tar and creosote, which lines the flue and increases fire risk.

A moisture meter is a great investment (£10–£15). You want your wood reading below 20% before burning.
