Then, on the way back to our accommodation, we stumbled across these beautiful heritage stoves on display in a garden in Dommartin-la-Chaussée.

What a fantastic little bit of stove history to discover while out exploring. ❤️

My daughter went to London… and somehow Wendy the Sweep got a shout-out from a town crier near Camden Market! 😂

She’d gone to see Bruno Mars at Wembley, then sent me a message saying, “Mum, listen to this!”

I never expected to hear Wendy the Sweep getting a mention while she was wandering around London!

Completely random, completely unexpected… and it absolutely made my day. ❤️

No chimneys today—just one of those little moments that reminds you how much fun running a local business can be.

Not every job I inspect leaves me smiling.

Earlier this week I came across a stove installation with significant gaps around the register (closure) plate. As a chimney sweep, it’s my responsibility to inspect what I can see and report anything that could affect the safe operation of the appliance.

These photographs show why attention to detail matters.

A register plate should provide a secure, non-combustible closure to the fireplace opening. Large gaps can allow soot and debris to fall, reduce the efficiency of the flue system and may require remedial work to bring the installation up to an appropriate standard.

What made me sad wasn’t the repair that now needs doing, it was knowing that someone paid good money, trusted a professional and believed the job had been completed properly.

Whether you’re a chimney sweep, stove installer or any other tradesperson, we all have a responsibility to do the job right. Good workmanship isn’t just about appearance – it’s about safety, professionalism and giving customers confidence that their home is protected.

I issued the appropriate warning notice and explained the findings to the customer so they can make an informed decision about the next steps.

One year ago today, I completed the NACS Accredited Chimney Sweep Course… and what a year it’s been! 🖤🧹🔥

Looking back, I honestly couldn’t have imagined where this journey would take me.

I’ve met some incredible people, made wonderful new friendships, learnt something new with almost every sweep, and had the privilege of being welcomed into so many homes across Lancashire and Yorkshire.

From pre-installation sweeps and bird nest removals to CCTV inspections, heritage fireplaces and beautiful British-made stoves, every day has been different - and I’ve loved every minute.

A mahoosive thank you to everyone who has supported Wendy the Sweep over the last year. To my customers for putting your trust in me, to fellow sweeps who have shared advice and encouragement, and to my family and friends who have cheered me on… thank you. It means more than you know.

Here’s to another year of keeping chimneys clean, homes safe, and fires burning brightly. ❤️🔥

This week was a little different for Wendy the Sweep… 🎩⭐️🧹

I had the privilege of visiting the home of ESSE, one of Britain’s oldest stove and cooker manufacturers, right here in the heart of Lancashire.

I wasn’t alone either. I was joined by Tom Milligan of A and B Milligan, Burnley, and Martin Glynn, President of The National Association of Chimney Sweeps, for a fascinating tour of the ESSE Stoves and Range Cookers factory, showroom and museum … with refreshments at the neighbouring Foundry Café after.

Walking through the history of ESSE, seeing how their stoves and cookers are designed and manufactured with such care, was a real reminder that great British engineering is still thriving.

💟 Every stove tells a story of craftsmanship, innovation and pride.

🎩🧹 As a chimney sweep, it’s always valuable to understand the appliances connected to the chimneys I work on. Seeing them built from the ground up gives me an even greater appreciation of the engineering behind them.

It’ll certainly make it even more special the next time I walk into a customer’s home and see an ESSE stove waiting for its annual sweep.

🕵️‍♀️🔎 “You’re like a chimney detective…”

When I completed my NACS Chimney Sweeping Course last year, the President and lead tutor of the UK’s largest chimney sweeping association said something that’s stayed with me ever since:

“You have a very important job. You’re like a chimney detective. As you peel back the layers, you’ll discover what’s been burning and learn so much about stove engineering.”

He was absolutely right.

🇬🇧 Today I swept a Clock Blithfield 5 – another beautifully British-engineered stove, manufactured in Staffordshire.

It has lovely clean lines and its distinctive Clock fire grate, but by heck… if you’ve ever removed and refitted one of those heavy throat plates, you’ll know you’ve only got a couple of millimetres to spare! It takes patience, care and a steady hand to avoid damaging the stove.

Many people think a chimney sweep simply pushes brushes up a flue.

The reality is very different.

Every sweep is also a detailed inspection. I’m looking for safety-critical issues, signs of excessive wear, damaged components, poor combustion, incorrect fuels, tar deposits, blockages and anything else that could affect the safe operation of your stove.

On today’s visit I also found nails inside a stove that’s only around 12 months old – a good reminder to be careful about what goes into the fire. I was able to chat with my customer about choosing the right fuels, explain why treated or contaminated wood should never be burned, and offer advice on the best locations for smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms.

Because for me, it’s never just about leaving a clean flue.

It’s about leaving my customers with a safer stove, better knowledge and greater peace of mind.

So much more than “just” a chimney sweep. 🖤🧹

I visited a lovely family in Nelson, Lancashire, who are renovating a traditional terraced house. They’d asked me to carry out a pre-installation chimney sweep before their new stove is fitted. 🖤

ℹ️ A pre-installation sweep gives the flue a thorough clean before installation, but it’s about much more than that.

🏠 It provides the opportunity to check the condition of the chimney, identify any issues that may need addressing, and share important fire safety advice. Most importantly, it gives homeowners the reassurance and peace of mind that they’re starting with a clean, safe flue.

⭐ There’s something rather special about helping families prepare for the day they light their very first fire in their beautifully renovated home.

📆 If you’re planning to install a wood-burning or multi-fuel stove, remember to book your pre-installation sweep as part of the process.

Saturday mornings look a little different for me when I get ready to go out sweeping … 🖤

Being a chimney sweep gives me the opportunity to help keep family homes safe. It’s a privilege to be trusted with something so important.

When I leave, I know I’ve done my little bit to help keep home fires burning brightly… and, most importantly, burning safely.

🔥 Every stove tells a story…

This inset log-burning stove, the Stûv 6, is the heart of the home in a beautiful Lancashire village, not far from Pendle.

Owned by a serving firefighter, he was keen to ensure he and his wife had taken all the right steps to keep their home safe. It’s always a pleasure, as a Registered Chimney Sweep, to provide this important service—and to tip my hat to ;my former colleagues in Lancs Fire and Rescue Service by offering a 🚒 Discount.

Every sweep reveals a little history. This time, the soot presented shiny crystals which suggested that at some point material other than the seasoned logs the stove was designed for had been burned. Then came the giveaway—a nail tucked away in the chamber, confirming that pallets had been used in the past.

♻️ Burning the correct, well-seasoned logs not only helps protect the life of your stove and chimney, but also burns more cleanly, is kinder to the environment, and helps keep your home safer.

ℹ️ Before leaving, I shared a Home Fire Safety leaflet along with a few practical tips to help keep everything burning efficiently and safely.

And, of course, another happy customer. 😊

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿One cowl… with a little extra Welsh pride!

ℹ️ When I met at a recent trade show, choosing them as one of my suppliers for chimney cowls was an easy decision. Their products are beautifully made, great quality, and there’s a style to suit just about every chimney pot and every customer’s needs.

🐉 But one cowl really caught my eye… their Welsh Dragon Cowl!

👀 It had been designed and created as a bit of a showpiece for the exhibition, but as soon as I saw it I knew someone who’d absolutely love it. I sent a photo to my Welsh neighbour and valued customer… and he immediately said, “I want one!”

💟 So here he is receiving his very own Welsh Dragon Cowl, made especially for him. I can’t wait to see it taking pride of place on top of his chimney. What a fantastic way to show a little Welsh patriotism!
