Another local job ticked off 🔥

We were out sweeping the log burner at The Star Inn in Pucklechurch — a proper village pub keeping that warm, cosy atmosphere alive for the community. There’s nothing better than walking into a pub with a real fire going, especially on those colder days 🍻

But behind that comfort is something important… regular chimney sweeping.

Log burners, especially in busy places like pubs, build up soot and creosote much quicker than people think. If it’s not maintained, it can:
• Reduce efficiency (more fuel, less heat)
• Cause smoke issues inside the building
• Increase the risk of chimney fires 🚫🔥

A clean chimney means a safer fire, better heat, and keeps places like this running just how they should — warm, welcoming, and safe for everyone.

Supporting local businesses like The Star Inn is what keeps villages like Pucklechurch thriving. And doing our bit to keep their fires burning safely is something we’re proud of 💪

If you’ve got a log burner at home or run a local business, don’t leave it too late — get it checked and swept regularly ✔️

🔥 Annual Open Fire Chimney Sweep at The Wishing Well 🔥

Another great visit from APlusChimneySweeps to carry out the annual open fire chimney sweep at The Wishing Well pub. This beautiful traditional stone pub features a large open fireplace, which is a fantastic focal point for customers, especially during the colder months when the fire is roaring.

As part of our visit, we carried out a full professional chimney sweep of the open fire to remove soot, ash, and any potential creosote build-up inside the flue. Regular sweeping is essential for pubs and commercial properties that use open fires to ensure:

✔ Safe operation of the fire
✔ Reduced risk of chimney fires
✔ Proper smoke draw and ventilation
✔ Compliance with insurance requirements
✔ A cleaner and more efficient fireplace

Large open fireplaces like this one can build up soot quickly due to frequent use, so an annual sweep (or more frequent depending on usage) is recommended for pubs, restaurants, and commercial venues.

It’s always great working in traditional venues like this that keep the charm of a real open fire alive for customers to enjoy. 🔥

If you manage a pub, restaurant, rental property, or home with an open fire or log burner, make sure your chimney is maintained and swept regularly.

📍 Covering Bristol, South Gloucestershire, Bath, Wotton-under-Edge and surrounding areas.

🔥 Smoke Evacuation Check After Sweeping 🔥

We carried out a smoke evacuation test on a log burner after completing a full chimney sweep. This important test involves using smoke pellets inside the stove to ensure the chimney is drawing correctly and safely removing smoke and gases from the appliance.

A smoke evacuation check allows us to confirm that the chimney is clear and functioning as it should. The smoke travels up the flue and exits the chimney pot, showing that the system is safely venting combustion gases outside the property.

During this test we can identify potential issues such as:
• Blockages caused by birds’ nests, debris or excessive soot
• Poor chimney draw which can affect how the stove burns
• Leaks within the flue or chimney structure
• Smoke escaping into adjoining rooms
• Faults with the installation or flue connections

This check is essential because a blocked or leaking chimney can allow dangerous gases like carbon monoxide to enter the home. Carrying out a professional sweep followed by a smoke test helps ensure your stove is operating safely and efficiently.

At APlus Chimney Sweeps we always take the time to properly inspect and test the chimney system so you can enjoy your fire with confidence.

If your log burner or open fire hasn’t been swept recently, get in touch to book your annual sweep and safety check.

🔥 Behind the scenes with APlusChimneySweeps 🔥

A little throwback to when APlusChimneySweeps had the privilege of working on the set of Young Sherlock, created by Guy Ritchie and released on Amazon Prime Video.

Our job was to ensure the open fireplaces used on set were professionally swept and safe before filming began. With special effects teams creating controlled fire scenes for the production, it was essential that every chimney and flue was clear of soot, nests, and blockages to allow the fires to burn correctly and safely.

Film sets might look glamorous on screen, but behind the scenes safety is absolutely critical. A blocked or dirty chimney can cause smoke to spill back into a room, create dangerous chimney fires, or even allow Carbon Monoxide Poisoning if gases cannot escape properly.

At APlus Chimney Sweeps, we provide the same level of care and professionalism for every customer as we did on this major production.

Our services include:

✔️ Chimney sweeping for wood burners, open fires, and multi-fuel stoves
✔️ Bird nest and blockage removal
✔️ Smoke evacuation testing
✔️ Chimney camera inspections
✔️ Chimney safety advice and maintenance
✔️ Certificates issued after sweeping

Regular chimney sweeping is recommended at least once a year to keep your fire burning efficiently and safely.

Whether it’s a historic building, a film set, or your home fireplace, we make sure your chimney is safe and ready to use.

🔥 Gas Fire & Flue Safety — This was Found During a Sweep Today 🔥

This photo shows a gas flue blockage removed during a routine chimney sweep. What you’re looking at is a build-up of lint, cobwebs, dust, fibres, and debris that has collected around the terminal of the flue. Over time, warm air rising through a gas fire pulls household dust, pet hair, carpet fibres and airborne debris into the flue where it compacts and restricts airflow.

Many people believe gas fires don’t need sweeping because they burn clean — but this is a perfect example of why annual sweeping and inspection is essential.

⚠️ Why is this dangerous?
Gas appliances rely on a clear flue to safely remove combustion gases outside. When a blockage like this forms:

• The flue cannot draw properly
• Harmful gases cannot escape efficiently
• Carbon monoxide can spill back into the room
• You may have NO visible warning signs

Carbon monoxide is colourless, odourless, and extremely dangerous — making regular maintenance a vital safety check for your home and family.

✅ Annual sweeping helps to:
• Remove lint and debris blockages
• Check safe operation of the flue
• Maintain correct airflow and ventilation
• Reduce carbon monoxide risk
• Keep your appliance working efficiently

Gas fires may look clean on the inside, but the flue often tells a different story.

If your gas fire hasn’t been checked or swept in the last 12 months, now is the time to book in — prevention is always better than risk.

Stay safe, stay warm, and keep your flues flowing freely. 🔥

Annual sweeping is a must! It only takes the once!!

Cosy nights and crackling fires are a welcome comfort on colder evenings but it’s important to use them safely.

If your log burner or open fire is back in use, make sure your chimney has been swept and your appliance properly serviced to help reduce the risk of chimney fires.

Keep logs, coal and other fuels stored well away from the heat, and always use a spark guard to stop embers escaping.

Don’t let a preventable chimney fire undo the comfort of your evening.

🔥 A Little Piece of Chimney Sweeping History 🔥

This fantastic chimney sweep ornament has been kept in the family for three generations — around 30 years old — traditionally handed out at weddings as a symbol of good luck. And it got me thinking about just how deep the history of chimney sweeping really runs.

For hundreds of years, chimney sweeps have been seen as lucky figures, especially here in the UK. Back in the 18th and 19th centuries, sweeps played a vital role in keeping homes safe from dangerous chimney fires. Because they protected houses and families from disaster, people began to associate chimney sweeps with safety, fortune, and new beginnings.

That’s why it became tradition for a chimney sweep to attend weddings or give a small ornament like this — touching a sweep was believed to bring luck, happiness, and prosperity to the couple’s future home. A tradition that still survives today!

But beyond the folklore, chimney sweeping has always been about something far more important: safety.

✅ Preventing chimney fires
✅ Improving ventilation and appliance efficiency
✅ Reducing carbon monoxide risks
✅ Keeping homes warm and safe year-round

Whether it’s an open fire, log burner, or gas appliance, regular sweeping and inspection are just as important now as they were centuries ago.

It’s amazing how a small ornament can carry so much history — a reminder that chimney sweeping isn’t just a job, it’s a craft built on tradition, community, and protecting homes.

If you’re planning an event, wedding appearance, or simply need your chimney checked and safely maintained, feel free to get in touch — keeping homes safe (and maybe bringing a little luck too!) is what we do best.

🔥 Stay safe. Stay warm. 🔥

Few and far between these days… looking after this lovely Rayburn beauty today 👌🔥
Not often we get to see these anymore unless you’re deep in the countryside, but once upon a time they had pride of place in kitchens just like this.

Built to last, full of character, and still doing exactly what they were made to do all these years later. Always a pleasure giving these icons the care they deserve 🧹🖤

If you’ve got a traditional range or solid fuel appliance, keeping the chimney clean is key to keeping it safe and running right.
