Cosy nights and crackling fires are a welcome comfort on colder evenings but it’s important to use them safely.

If your log burner or open fire is back in use, make sure your chimney has been swept and your appliance properly serviced to help reduce the risk of chimney fires.

Keep logs, coal and other fuels stored well away from the heat, and always use a spark guard to stop embers escaping.

Don’t let a preventable chimney fire undo the comfort of your evening.

Clean Air Night 2026 puts air quality in focus. The SIA explains why how we burn matters, and how practical choices can reduce emissions.

How you light and re-fuel your fire affects emissions.

Some simple changes can make a real difference:
🔥 Use the top-down lighting method
🔥 Use the correct sized logs for your stove – check the manufacturer’s instructions for guidance
🔥 Don’t overload the firebox
🔥 When refuelling open the door by a small amount to allow air pressure to equalise, before opening fully
🔥 Avoid slumbering the stove overnight

These practices will help improve combustion, reduce smoke and help ensure your stove performs as designed.

Modern wood burning stoves must meet strict emissions standards to comply with UK law and have been precision engineered to burn fuel in the most efficient way.

Compared to other, older forms of solid fuel secondary space heating, a modern Ecodesign compliant stove can:

🔥 help reduce particulate matter emissions by up to 90% when compared to an open fire*
🔥 use far less fuel thanks to the efficiency standards defined by the Ecodesign Regulation
🔥 deliver more heat to the room instead of up the chimney

This Clean Air Night, let’s talk about what actually makes a difference.
