An interesting one from the other day. Swept a clients wood burning stove resulting in deposits of flakey tar as apposed to soot. This was due to burning damp wood. It can be as a result of poor ventilation of the fire and not burning your fire hot enough.
The problem was resolved by using chemicals on the lit fire which reacted with the tar helping to reduce the build up.
Be careful tar is created in several ways and is the catalyst of chimney fires. Sometimes it can be swept away using the right brush but as above chemical intervention can be necessary and can be expensive in extreme cases.

Stacking logs close to your fire?

DON'T DO IT!!!

It may appear pretty and give your home the look that it belongs in a glossy magazine…BUT stacking wood too close to your log burner is dangerous. The Fire Service have many recorded house fires where this is the primary cause.

Keep safe and get your chimney swept every year.

Just a couple of examples of jobs from last week, the focus being on how we keep things as clean as possible.
The first is an open fire with a decorative cast surround and the third picture is a multi fuel stove.
In both cases a special sheet and bar msgnets are used to create an air tight seel around the opening. A hoover is also working to pick up any airborne soot / ash. The rods are passed through the sheet allowing the sweep to be done in a clean and efficient way culminating in the sheet being removed and the soot being hoovered away. No mess. No fuss.

Carbon monoxide monitors can and will save lives.
The office of national statistics published data in December 22 relating to all accidental carbon monoxide poisonings in England and Wales in 2021. Unfortunately the deaths were 43, 14 of which were in the home.
Make sure you have one in place before you start using your stove/ fire this year and get into the habit of testing it once a week. It will look after you if you look after it. You can get sealed battery ones that last for 7 and 10 years as well as the replacement battery type.
The pictures show one of mine which is usually fixed to the wall at the side of the chimney breast 6 inch below the ceiling at a distance of between 1m and 3m of the appliance.
Stay safe.

Storing wood adjacent to your stove a big NO NO.
If stored too close to your stove wood can heat up, release noxious gases into the room and in extreme cases catch fire. This is well documented and fire brigades up and down the country will attest to it.
On the training course I attended we were told the wood should be a minimum of 500mm away from the stove. Others say more. The bottom line is if the stored wood is warm it's too close. Best practice for me is keeping it out of the hearth altogether. Less risk more piece of mind.
Stay safe and enjoy your stoves this autumn and winter. And don't forget make sure you have a working carbon monoxide monitor in the room where your appliance is situated. This includes open fires.

Not one of mine but a great example of what can be blocking your chimney coming up to the new burning season. Nesting season has now ended and the birds have left the nest but left behind their temporary homes that can prevent poisonous combustion fumes from exiting your chimney and in some cases force the fumes back into your room.
Get your chimney swept prior to lighting your first fire to ensure its not blocked and safe to use.

A good example of how we sweep a stove with a flue liner. As always the key being to keep everything as clean and tidy as possible.
An air tight seal is created by sealing a special sheet to the front of the stove using bar magnets. The rod guide is passed through the front of the sheet allowing the sweeping rods to be passed through into the stove then liner. The rods keep getting added until the top is reached then swept for a second time on the way down in the opposite direction ensuring an effective sweep is achieved.
All the time this is happening the triple filter hoover is sucking up any stray soot that might come down the rod guide.
After sweeping the sheet is removed and the soot hoovered from the stove. A very clean and effective process.

Just thought I'd share a couple of today's jobs with you.
Picture 1 shows a stove that vents into a liner that hasn't been swept for two years As you can see the soot soon builds up and can create blockage issues if not swept regularly. The governing bodies state that appliances like this should be swept at least once a year.
Picture 2 shows how we seal off an open fire or in this case a stove which vents into an open chimney. In the latter case the stove is taken out and the stove pipe removed allowing access to sweep the chimney. The sheets keep all the soot and debris in the fireplace and protect the room.
Remember get yourselves a carbon monoxide monitor.
